Drupal: How to apply SSL to only log in and administrative section?

I have been using Drupal in non-production environments for some time, but am finally bringing a site online for a public facing site.  I'd like to use SSL when the site administrator or other authenticated users log in and edit content.  I suppose I can put the whole site (public and authenticated alike) under SSL, but that seems less than ideal.  Is it possible to apply SSL just to those logging in and logged into the site?  If so can you point me in the right direction?

    There are definitely ways to go about doing this, though there is a lot of debate on the best way to achieve this.

    I'd recommend using Secure Pages (http://drupal.org/project/securepages)

    To elaborate, since the project page is a bit sparse with regards to detail. Secure Pages allows you to specify specific pages as "secure", which will force redirection of that node to https. This requires that you have SSL set up correctly on the server, and that Drupal is configured to support SSL access.
