Joomla 1.5 admin area has missing pieces
When I go to module manager and choose to edit on of the modules, the save, apply, close and help buttons aren't there anymore!

Hi Vinodh
Do I need to replace that file or edit some code within it?

I have a different take on this:
Check permissions and ownerships of relevant files / directories - modules
Could your site have been hacked?

Hi j-b-t
no I don't believe it's been hacked but I did have to re-install the admin area after a backup attempt resulted in the site crashing.
where do you check permissions etc.?

If you are using cpanel or similar it's php myadmin you can usually see permissions and ownerships there.
I generally ftp into the server and look at the directories that way.

i've gone into php myadmin but cannot find anything about permissions... I'm reasonably new to all this so can you be more specific for me?
Many thanks

ok - you have 2 options - sorry - probably better than phpmy admin is to
1 - goto file manager and check permissions there.
Or
2 - I would normally use an ftp client like winscp and ftp in - then you can see ownerships as well as permissions
If the problem is ownership - you may need your host to change this for you.
Ownership and permissions is too big a topic for me to cover here - but you can find lots of explanations online; this link might be useful:
