Question

Submenus don't show up in Joomla site

Asked by: snowball77

HELP, I am going crazy here.
I have added a new menu item with submenus as you can see in the attached image.
The Top menu item with submenus shows on the website http://avn.org.au
but the bottom one > Pandemic Influenza does not show the sub menus that are there.
I am using Joomla 1.0.x and I am going crazy trying to work this out.

I tried creating another menu module and copying an exising menu and was going to try to use that, but when I copied the menu, the submenus in that copied menu didn't show up either.

I have no idea what I am missing here.

I hope someone can help me?

Thanks,

Sorry I can't see the attached image - hmm just double check -
  - Check the submenus in question are published
 -  Check the submenus in question are at the correct level that is being shown - like - pandemics is the parent of the submenus - there is no inbetween level

Hmm the resources and others are working.. what sort of menu item is pandemic (i.e. is  it a wrapper / a link to section / etc ) compared with other menu items?

It  may be related to top (horizontal)  menu if the lhs menu items are under these and ot in their own menu also......

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-21 at 17:32:18ID: 24679162

ok,
The menu items are published.
The sub menus are at the correct level, I don' t think there are any in between levels.
Pandemic is a Blog Section

Not sure what you mean by the last comment "It  may be related to top (horizontal)  menu if the lhs menu items are under these and ot in their own menu also......"

I have attached this image...can you see it?

by: bobohostPosted on 2009-06-23 at 10:40:28ID: 24694067

Have you tried comparing the Parameters of the Menus that work with pandemic menu to see if one of the options is different then the rest?

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-23 at 12:29:15ID: 24695194

Yes, I have tried that.
Infact I copied a menu item, and copied a module so they were exactly the same, but still doesn't show?

by: bobohostPosted on 2009-06-23 at 13:25:42ID: 24695854

So if you create any new menu items in the main menu it shows the same behavior of not listing the sub menu correct.

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-23 at 14:19:44ID: 24696416

exactly
Its so frustrating.  I can't understand what is going on.
I copy a menu from the menu manager and it asks if I want to copy all the menu items, and I say yes, but when I publish that menu it behaves differently to the one I copied

by: j-b-tPosted on 2009-06-23 at 20:19:46ID: 24698026

These are often a little tricky - sorry just having another look

Hmm it  looks  a bit confusing - like informed voice and pandemic are together as in one mod - have you tried to separate them?

Anyway what I meant by top menu - if there is a relationship between teh top menu items and teh left hand side item - the "split" menu efffect can go awry.

So if in your top menu you create a second tier (published but tell module only to show top level)  an include pandemic item there, with it's sublinks underneath - then in left hand menu publish this tier - it will probably work - I know this is a little confusing.. Have a fiddle and let us know and I will try to explain more - can you show me a pic of your top menu also

by: j-b-tPosted on 2009-06-23 at 20:22:22ID: 24698038

addendum - the above solution may not be exactly correct - without knowing your menu system in details - but the theory should work in some way... i have had similar problems but iwth J1.5 - but sorted it in this manner

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-24 at 01:37:34ID: 24699236

Ok, I was looking for the original top menu, but I cannot find it, so I don't know what settings I need.
This site was developed by someone else so I am missing some clues here.
There are extra settings in J1.5 that are not available in 1.0.x and I know you can include things like the end level and start level, but I can't see how to do this.

Its so driving me crazy.  I wonder if showing you the login would help.
This is highly highly sensitive information though so I would prefer not, but this is getting beyond a joke for not being able to create any form aof a submenu

I think j-b-t is getting close.  Definitely check out the mainmenu module and confirm the menu assignment and position.

by: j-b-tPosted on 2009-06-24 at 11:46:14ID: 24704343

try unpublishing the top menu ..... in module manager

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-24 at 14:39:51ID: 24706161

Hi JBT did you mean the constructed top menu?  Because on that site, the top menu that you can see isn't a module at all, its hard coded into the html I think?

by: j-b-tPosted on 2009-06-24 at 16:35:00ID: 24706909

I know - (whihc may be the problem) but you alos hav ea module published called top menu and it is using teh same menu as left menu so may help - in fact it may be that that menu that is hard coded is actuyally calling "top menu module" again it's using teh same actual menu and tis may be the problem

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-24 at 20:56:30ID: 24707930

ok I unpublished the Top Menu module - which didn't affect anything on the site at all, as it was published to user3 which doesn't exist on the html. but still no sub menus.
What I did also was publish that menu - which was using IVMenu and put it to the right hand side, and made it a vertical menu....the Top Menu item showed the submenus, but the pandemic influenza ones WOULD STILL NOT SHOW!!

by: j-b-tPosted on 2009-06-25 at 01:23:51ID: 24709255

OK chaneg eth pandemic influenza mneu item type to a link type rather than linking to the section directly

by: j-b-tPosted on 2009-06-25 at 23:56:06ID: 24718579

and if that fails I think the problem again lies in confusion between top (hardcoded menu) abd keft hand menu - this may be fixable by doign something like buidling in submenu items in eth top menu (that are never actually called  - but that include link to pandemic section.

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-26 at 22:23:07ID: 24726440

Do you mean just make a URL link to Pandemic Influenza Section?
How will the sub menus show with that?

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-26 at 22:23:26ID: 24726441

Do you want the username and password again to try?

by: j-b-tPosted on 2009-06-27 at 02:06:47ID: 24726952

Do you mean just make a URL link to Pandemic Influenza Section?
Yes

How will the sub menus show with that?.. just like they do when you put them under some other menu item like resources - sorry not quite on the same page( or should I say article - ir actually in 1.0 item......)

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-27 at 02:18:37ID: 24726998

so which module position would the submenus appear in.

I can' t see how that would work.

I will try it I guess, but it makes no sense to me as to how a link will show the submenus on the left hand menu as I want them to

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-29 at 13:58:53ID: 24740187

Add Pandemic Influenza as a URL did not make the submenus appear

by: j-b-tPosted on 2009-06-29 at 14:08:21ID: 24740260

hmm - I guess we could try every fix in the book - another suggestion is to make an article called Pandemic influenza and actually make it a page insetad of a section and then move menu items under it. It seems really strange that the submenus sit under any other parent - so i'm wondering if there is something a little funny about that sections page or link. - Can you peruse the com_content code and compare it to another install to see if there are any probs with it etc?

At this point if I were you, (after looking at the code, I would copy the database minus teh menus  - trial it on a fresh J1.0 install and see if it worked there then add template etc and troubleshoot step by step to see where the problem lies.

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-29 at 19:43:36ID: 24741864

I think i may suggest redoing the whole site.
This is just unworkable

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-06-29 at 19:44:22ID: 24741869

Thanks for all your help JBT.
I am not sure the best way to close this question.
I feel you deserve points for your efforts even though it wasn't solved.
What should I do?
