Joomla - plugin module or component - and how do I packge the DB stuff

I have a little application I need to develop in Joomla (or add to an existing installation). I need some assistance in determining how to implement the extension.

The extension needs to capture a URL parameter and write it to a database. I have implemented as
a) Module
b) Pluggin
c) Directly modifying index.php

All work fine - but which of these is the right one to use?

Secondly, if implemented as module or plugin - how do I package the DB stuff - all documentation seems to indicate this can only be done for a component - which I don't think fits the requirement here.

Core hack is best my friend. I would go with answer C.

I dissagree ... You won't choose option C, not if you intend to redistribute or to continue update your joomla version in the future. - You'll have to repatch the index.php after every update or so...

Version B - Plugin is the most elegant, but for packing the database you'll have to use it in conjunction with option "D" - Component. The component is for the DB instalation .. and can also have the view / edit functions for some db generated reports (if needed)... but the real job will be done by the plugin.

This is my sugestion. if you need more details, just ask.

Thanks - that is pretty much what I figured.

I am going to give you the points - but I have one more question - because you seem to know this stuff and there has not been too many response.

I have implemented as a module - works perfectly - except on site.

When I install it at the client - it says its installed no errors - you can enable it - assign it to a position - the whole thing - it just does not execute.

I have reduced the module to the following
echo 'Hullo World';
exit();

This does not work - page loads without loadinh the module. Tried implementing as a plugin as well - same result.

I don't know enough about Joomla to know why the framework is not loading the module - they do have other modules that seem to be working.

Any ideas.

Implemented as a Module for now - but on reflection plugin is the way to go.

With respect to the other issue regardign the module not working - this was because the position the module was assigned to did not exist in the template that was being used.
