Question

joomla custom template module issue

Asked by: jasotasticon

For some reason the module positions I created in my custom template aren't showing up in the Module manager, but instead there are a whole mess of what look like the standard modules?

Not sure if there is a relationship, but when installing my template I keep getting the message:

XML Parsing Error at 1:1. Error 4: not well-formed (invalid token)

...but then the template installs successfully and it says:

"Install Template Success"

and then in my template page in the parameters section it says:

The parameter file /templates/pcia2010/params.ini is unwritable!

I asked for advice and someone suggested I just make my own, and that seemed to work, but now I am having the module issue. : (

anyone?

Have you got your modules entered into your template.xml file properly?

Can you post your template files so I can see?

Funny thing is, everything shows up just right in the preview, just doesn't show in the Module Manager

by: snowball77Posted on 2009-10-28 at 13:18:36ID: 25687781

So when you preview you template within the template manager you can see the modules are showing in the correct position is that right?

Do you have anything published in those positions?

by: j-b-tPosted on 2009-10-28 at 13:56:39ID: 25688254

hi. if the modules are correctly set up in the template. you can manually add them.  say there is a position called. position-right. then all you need do is.  next time youwant to put a midule in this position when selecting the module position from thdrop down manually type in poition-
right. in the drop down box and it will be added to the drop down positions for the future

by: jasotasticonPosted on 2009-10-28 at 14:08:11ID: 25688337

snowball77,

Yes, i can see the modules are showing in the correct position in the temp manager preview.

j-b-t,
yeah, I thought about that... but wouldn't it just be great if it worked the way it was supposed to? I am doing this for a client and I don't want all those other positions showing, and I want them to be able to pick the positions from a happy drop-down menu.

teh other positions will go away when not being used unless wrongly coded in eth template xml file. although a couple are standard in joomla and will remain. you may need to tinker with teh core to hide these - or better still use eth stadnard posistions when you write  template, perhaps.

j-b-t,

This doesn't really answer my question as to how to make it function properly.

If it is a matter of the xml file being "wrongly coded" I would thrilled for you to look at my code above and let me know in what way it is imperfect.

thanks!

can you show us a screenshot of your preview of the template

by: j-b-tPosted on 2009-10-28 at 15:39:40ID: 25689034

OK  if you know he actual names of your module positions

you can find these by going to http://yoursite.com/?tp=1

and see the module position names

then let's say the only positions are called one , two, three
  just change this bit:
        <positions>
                        <position>optional</position>
                <position>top</position>
                <position>left</position>
                <position>righta</position>
                <position>rightb</position>
                <position>bottom</position>
        </positions>

to         <positions>
<position>one</position>
                <position>two</position>
                <position>three</position>

        </positions>

snowball77,

Thanks for your time, but the client took it over and did the modules manually, so it's all set up now.

j-b-t,

I am not sure what you are suggesting here. I created those positions on purpose. I don't want to change the number of my positions and/or their names. This would kind of defeat the purpose of making a custom template no?

Anyhow don't worry about it. This questions time has passed.

Thanks All!
