Office files open and save very slowly on mapped network drive.

Network consists of Windows 2003 R2 X64 SP2 server and about 30 workstations running either Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP2. The server has no other purpose than to allow users to share, store and backup files. The server hardware and O/S was recently upgraded from Windows 2K. Everything worked fine until the upgrade. When the new server was installed, the users started to complain that files were taking a long tme to open from explorer and a long ime to save. I have tried everything to solve this problem:
1. Removed anti-virus software
2. Turned off DDE for DOC and XLS files.
3. Changed autodisconnect value to maximum setting.
4. Modified intranet settings.
5. Re-istalled office 2003
The strange part is that when the documents are accessed using the "File..Open" menu in the application, the files open instantly. I hope someone can help as this is the modt frustrating problem I have ever experienced.
