Different versions of Microsoft Exchange Server have been overwhelming users with architecture, functioning and features. Undoubtedly, MS Exchange has completely changed the whole business scenario by offering exactly what enterprises demand. A new kid in this basket, MS Exchange Server 2013 is also expected to create stir amidst users. As Microsoft has released Exchange 2013 preview, it has started showing magic with some intelligent improvements and enhancements along with a rich package of technologies.

The post describes the new features in Microsoft Exchange 2013, lets read on to know.

Integration with Lync and SharePoint: Users can now enjoy MS SharePoint 2013 and MS Lync 2013 with the Exchange 2013 as they are greatly integrated with it.

Database Management: The developers at Microsoft have used C# to write the code for store service demonstrating the greater availability. However, the SQL database does not replace the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE); it is still in continuation instead. But, a nice thing is - the databases are set to remain in their own work process, preventing the problems that could be caused by longer process in database that interrupts the other. In addition, with the integration of SharePoint (as mentioned above), 'Fast Search' has also been added to the store, resulting in smart search and indexing.

Exchange Administration Center: Microsoft has added a web based admin console, Exchange Administrator Center (EAC) to the Exchange 2013. EAC is a replacement for the two unique interfaces, Exchange Management Console (EMC), and the Exchange Control Panel (ECP); responsible for managing Exchange Server 2010. Many administrators might not like the feature much; however, it allows partitioning the access of Internet and intranet in the virtual directory of ECP IIS. With the feature, you can get a good control over the rights for having Internet access to Exchange Administrator Center when you are outside the organization. Moreover, the EAC manages public folders, which were managed by the Public Folder Management Console in earlier versions. It makes the folders 'public folder mailboxes' indicating the usage of regular database mailboxes.

Architecture: Microsoft Exchange has been improved in performance. If you have used Exchange 2007 and 2010, you are well aware of the fact that they are divided into several server roles for keeping track on performance. However, MS Exchange 2013 is not loaded with a list of roles; instead, the two roles assigned to it include:

Mailbox Server Role: It includes the crucial components of server, such as unified messaging.
Client Access Server Role: It is responsible for managing proxy services, authentication etc.

Migrating to Exchange 2013 Increases Mailbox Size: When you migrate from an older version to MS Exchange 2013, it increases the size of the mailbox to 30-40%. However, Microsoft has not increased the disk space; for accuracy, the mailbox size increases as per the size limit or quota calculation. Therefore, the size of the mailbox can be exceeded in MS Exchange 2013, preventing users from facing the data loss that may occur due to the size limit. You can also configure the quota values or database by using ProhibitSendReceiveQuota, IssueWarningQuota and ProhibitSendQuota on Set-MailboxDatabase and Set-Mailbox cmdlets.

OWA (Outlook Web App): MS Exchange Server 2013 consists of a totally newly designed Outlook Web App. Moreover, it allows users to get an offline access. For instance, user can write email in the browser in offline mode and can get it delivered as the connection to the Internet establishes. The feature is supported by OWA in different most used browsers including Microsoft IE 10, Google Chrome 16, and Apple Safari 5. Furthermore, you can choose UI layouts from a large set of layouts for various devices, such as tablet, desktop etc.

Data Security through Data Loss Prevention : With the feature, users can see a warning if the sensitive and crucial data prevention policies are not being complied. The Data Loss Prevention feature makes the users aware when some sensitive data is put in an email.

Inbuilt Security : The slew of features in Exchange 2013 includes an inbuilt antimalware that blocks phishing and other criminal attempts. In Exchange 2007, you had an option to choose to keep the antispam on or off. In contrast, Exchange 2013 has much better security measures.

Site Mailboxes : Traditionally, emails and the documents are placed separately and both the mediums are used for teams' collaboration. But, different client applications have to be used to access both email and the documents, which is a challenge. Microsoft has introduced a new feature 'site mailbox' with MS Exchange 2013 that reduces these complexities. The feature allows getting access to emails in Outlook 2013 and both the documents in a SharePoint site with the same client. A site mailbox consists of membership of SharePoint site, an interface addressing lifecycle needs, and sharing package of Exchange mailbox and SharePoint site.

Above listed are the notable features, Microsoft has embedded with the Exchange Server 2013. The new version has undeniably provided a different and new experience to the administrators as well as users, however, some important concepts have been removed from Exchange 2013 that were available in the previous versions.

Well, this is one thing that you experience a new Exchange functionality; another side may include the associated problems. Anything that is feature rich could also encounter technical issues due to various reasons. As you have seen that the previous versions were not away from the complexities, Exchange 2013 is also included in this list.
