Question

Exchange Backup using ntbackup

Asked by: dong

I tried to backup our Exchange server using ntbackup (the version comes with Exchange). It works fine if I do it through the ntbackup window interface. However, if I tried to do the backup using a batch file under CMD, I was told that the user doesn't have enough access rights to "\\XCHGSRV\Directory". The user is logged in as administrator! The commandline I typed in the batch file is:

ntbackup backup "\\XCHGSRV\Directory" /d "Directory" /t normal /tape:0

Does anyone know what the problem is? By the way, if I tried to do a backup for the drives using the batch file, it works fine! Only when I tried to backup Exchange Directory and Information Store, I will have the access problem.

Try using the interactive switch so the job will interact with the desktop and use the security token of the user that is liged in at that time.  Make sure that you have the correct access to access the whole exchange database with the account that you leave logged in when the back up kicks off.  You can also schedule this to run with the SU command and specify the user that has the access to back up the database.

Check, that user have rights "Log on as batch job". Even Administrator have to get this rights (does not by default). And, as magnum saied, check NTFS and Share permissionsa on "Directory", 'cause your job run on \\XCHGSRV share

You have to stop of the exchange services, ntbackup isn't hot backup for Exchange server Files, there is other software that make backup with the exchange service running by example ARCServe of Computer Associates. I'm using this.

Although ntbackup (the version comes with Exchange only) is not hot backup for Exchange server files, it can still backup the Exchange server and it can perform either onsite or offsite backup. I have tried it by running it directly and it works fine. I know ntbackup is a simple backup program, it doesn't support schedule, the administration and management interface is poor, the performance is poor comparing to ArcServe and the functionality is basic, but it still does the backup job and it is free.

What OS you use for Exchange? NT4 or 2000? Do you run ntbackup from remote mashine or on Exch server mashine? Do you have domain or workgroup? Do you use domain admin account or local admin account?
Can you describe your environment with more details.

NTBackup software that ships with Exchange, IS Exchange aware! When logged into a server and using NTBackup's GUI interface, the login credentials of currently logged in user are are used.

However, when running the backup from a batch file, the Schedule service is utilised, unless specifically stated otherwise (not a great idea to store account and plain text passwords anywhere - such as a batch file).  It is this Schedule account which has insufficient permissions to perform the function being attempted (it sounds as though you are performing this backup over a LAN).

From the machine you wish to run this batch file, go to Start|Settings|Control Panel.  Choose the Services icon and locate the Schedule service.  Change the settings on this service to a Domain Account (which you will need to create first) which has permissions to access the Exchange Server (possibly over the network).  It will need the following settings:

Log on as a service
Backup files and directories

Then, schedule your batch file to run (daily would be a great idea) and all will work.

Cheers,
SunnieGal
