Question

Pub.edb too big to defrag

Asked by: Jharper

I am an experienced Exchange 5.5 guy but I'm looking for a good solution for my problem. I have a large pub.edb (55GB) and have recently removed about 54GB out of it. I'd like to do an offline defrag to reclaim my space but the database is on a 100GB array and I don't have enough room. I have 4 other Exchange servers in my network and have rehomed all the public folders off of this particular server. I'd like to remove the pub.edb completely, recreate it and replicate/rehome the public folders back to the the troubled server. Anyone ever done this with any success? I'm also open to other solutions.

Thanks!!

Do you have enough space on another location on your network? If you do, you could map a drive to that location, move the pub.edb and degrag it there.

Unfortunately, I don't have the space anywhere else on the network either.

As long as you have rehomed all of the public folders and the system folders, you can totally get rid of the pub.edb.

I have given that solution to customers many times. If the pub.edb has nothing but replicas, or has nothing homed on it, just create a new one and the replicas will be pushed back, and the pub.edb will be rebuilt.

Just make sure that you rehome the system folders, or change the site folder server if the troubled server holds this role.

You can remove the public folder from the server, as long as you have rehomed all the public folders to another server and removed any replicas. If this was the first server in the site, you will also have to move the system folders (MS Knowledge Base Article Q152959 explains how to do this).

To remove the public store, run Performance Optimizer and clear the Public Store checkbox. Once that has completed, start Exchange Administrator and delete the Public Store object under the server name. Now delete the pub.edb file.

To recreate the public store, in Exchange Administrator, click New on the file menu and choose other. Click Information Store then Public.  Choose the server you are working on from the server list and click OK. Run Performance Optimizer and select the Public Store checkbox.

Note that mck's comment is pretty much an exact copy of my first comment.

However the second part of his comment (removing the public store with the optimizer) will not work for you since you eventually want to bring the public folders back.

So without duplicating my post - i would re-insert/redirect you to my original post as a suggestion.

Note the time difference betwen our posts (1 min). I didn't copy your post, we just happened to post almost the same info at the same time. I wouldn't say my method will not work for him. I have performed this method to remove and later recreate a public store. This is the method Microsoft recommends for removing and recreating a public store. The Performance Optimizer step may be unnecessary, I have never tried the procedure without performing this step.

No matter what steps you take to do this, I recommend you test this out in a lab before you attempt it on your production server.

AWWW!! Well don't i feel like a horse's a**.

Well, it was not personally attacking you, but see people do that all of the time...

Anyway, what i meant by the second part of your suggestion would not work specifically for JHarper, is because he stated

"I'd like to remove the pub.edb completely, recreate it and replicate/rehome the public folders back to the the troubled server."

Note the "remove" then "recreate" and "rehome..folders back"

So running the optimizer to completey remove the pub.edb database is not necessary since he wants to bring the info right back.

-Just make sure there are no PF's homed on that server
-make sure there are no system folders homed on that server
-stop the information store and move the pub.edb off to another server (if possible)
-start the information store to create a new pub.edb
-Replicate the PF's back if you want.....
