Question

Message "Extension 'SMTP' Could not be loaded"

Asked by: tinkiewinkie

Hi guys & Gals,

I am getting the message:

“Extension 'SMTP' Could not be loaded”

whenever I run the Internet Mail Connector in the Admin program.

This is not the first time that I have got this message and probably not the last.

I currently run several Exchange 5.5 servers on top of Windows 2K member servers. Windows has full SP + Exchange running SP4. Also running Netshield for OS protection and Antigen for exchange. I have several sites with site connectors. Sites have mailbox servers + bridgehead.

I have read previous postings + MS knowledgebase, regarding this problem but I still am unable to resolve it. I have tried almost everything!

Usually I end up trashing and rebuilding the server, which is not major because they are only bridgeheads, but I would prefer to solve it rather than trash and burn!

Whenever I try to re-service pack or run setup /U I get an error:

"Processing file ….\i386\shared.ins, at or near line 7

The network path was not found.

Microsoft Windows NT
ID no: oxc0020035"

I hope somebody has seen this before.

Thanks in advance,

Barnaby

Have you checked mfc42.dll for corruption/missing?  Have you checked the Exchsrvr\Add-Ins  directory for sharing and permissions?  Please list some of what you have tried.

mfc42.dll is there but is a different version to the one on the setup disk. I am unable to replace it because my server is win 2k, which tracks dll versions and does not allow system dlls to be overwritten. I did delete it so it would replaced itself with the backup copy. No change!

The version is 6.0.8.665.0, which is the same as the version on my working server in a different site.

I also checked the add-ins folder for sharing as per KB Q186787 but all is as should be.

I did notice that the above article and any referring to the mfc42.dll are for a slightly different problem. I am sorry but I did not give you the full detail of the error message. It is as follows:

“Extension ‘SMTP’ could not be loaded

A problem occurred with the extension .DLL file,
possibly due to memory shortage. Close some
applications or windows, and try again.

      Microsoft Exchange Administrator
      ID no: c10312c6”

Also seen KB Q173805, which talks about adding 5.5 servers to 5.0 site – This was a fresh site and has worked – Something has changed?

In exch admin, under configuration, Add-ins, look at the properties of the "Exte... for Internet mail service" Match that version number to the actual file version using windows explorer.  Do they match?

Yea - I even removed the Extension for Internet mail for i386 and recreated it as per johnpjohn's earlier querie

I also checked all eamil address generators and made sure the version numbers are the same as my other server using raw mode.

Can you walk through this one please?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q158336

Just make sure that ALL of the email address generators match the file versions in NT Explorer..(including any third party fax connectors)

I've also seen this issue resolve by stopping all Exchange services AND 3rd party software, and re-applying the service pack which will also check all dll's...

Thanks,

I did what you said: KB Q158336 and found that some of the generators had different versions. I changed them all to be: 5.5.2653.23 – Restarted services – This now causes the problem that that KB is supposed to fix. Changing them back to the settings on my other working server resolves this.

Your second instruction (stopping services and SP) gave me the same error as in my original posting:

“Processing file ‘C:\exchange service pack 4\i386
\shared.ins’, at or near line 7

The network path was not found.

      Microsoft Windows NT
      ID no: oxc0020035”

It’s looking like another re-install!

Oh and all versions of the three files: Inproxy.dll, Pcproxy.dll, X400prox.dll match the SP4 file versions
