The restore of the metabase.bin did not resolve the problem for long.....the exchange 2000 server still keeps on hanging almost every day (will explain where problem is happening in a moment), I then took Kidego's advice in the above article and rebuilt IIS and Exchange. Once this was done, the server appeared ok for at least a day.
Now this hanging appears to happen for no good reason. We have just had the server hang again this morning and the following events occur in the system log:-
Event ID: 7031 Source: Service Control Manager
The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 1 milliseconds: Run the configured recovery program.
....then similar for IMAP4, FTP NNTP, POP3, Routing Engine, SMTP and W3SVC. (Similar to entries to my original problem).
I then get an information message with Event ID: 2 Source: IISCTLS
IIS stop command received from user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. The logged data is the status code.
Presumably, this is why exchange is hanging.
Just before the above errors, the only events in the log were 2 of the following:-
Event ID: 421 Source: NNTPSVC
Post Status Report. In the last 60 minutes, the virtual server 1 has successfully received 0 posts.
(Surely this has nothing to do with it, and these happened 12 minutes earlier anyway).
In the application log, the following events occurred at the same time as the 7031 errors above:-
Information types. Event ID: 1032 Source: POP3SVC
Attempting to start the Microsoft Exchange POP3 Service (Build 6.0.6249.0).
The same event was also logged for the IMAP4SVC.
When I went in to have a look at the services, the POP3SVC, IMAP4SVC and Routing Engine service all were indicated as "starting". They never managed to start completely, and I was unable to do anything about this state except reboot, so presumable this is also a reason for the exchange hanging.....but which came first...it claims to have started them later in the log, but then more where it is trying to start!!!!
On reboot.....everything starts up ok, and everybody has access to their email until the next time....which is usually within 24 hours.
What on earth is happening and can I resolve this problem. Should I try the re-install of IIS and Exchange again?
When I did the re-install the first time, when I came to re-install E2k, it spotted that sp3 had been applied and prompted me to reapply the service pack after the re-install. However, when I was re-installing E2k, there was the standard message about newer target files existing than the ones being copied. I told the installation process, initially, to put the old ones on, thinking that the sp3 would update them correctly later. This meant constantly answering yes to replacing the files, and eventually I said "No to all", once again thinking that the sp3 would put the correct files anyway.
When the re-install had finished, I rebooted, except Exchange seemed to hang (I think it was at this point anyway)......eventually, I was able to reboot again, and then apply the sp3 which ran without problem and the system seemed to boot ok, including all things email!
This is my sorry state of woe, any help would be most appreciated on this matter, as what has always been a stable system, is now driving me up the wall.
Regards
Ian
