Exchange 2000 is rebuilding exchange logs from months ago - WHY???

We are running Exchange 2000 in a Windows 2000 domain.   Our Exchange server is now rebuilding log files in the "Exchange Logs" folder.  These logs contain email messages from several months ago and I can see no reason why these would be rebuilt.
