The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Moving FSMO and other server roles

Asked by mehranalmasi in Exchange Email Server

Tags: server, win2k

I am upgrading my Exchange server hardware. The old server has Win2k server and Exchange 2000 with all the latest service packs.

Here is what I have done:
1- Installed Win2K on new server. Apply all service packs.
2- Join the new server to old server domain.
3- Run dcpromo on the new server which copied all account info. from old server. Both now are DC's.
4- Installed Exchange 2K on the new server.
5- Moved a few test mail boxes to the new server.

Here is what I am planning on doing:

6- Test: Run dcpromo on the old server to transfer all FSMO roles to the new server. This will be done without checking the option of this server is the last server in the domain.
7- Switch the IP addresses of the servers (names remain different) so mail now gets routed to the new server and ensure that all email goes out, comes in and accessible with the test accounts.
8- If step 6 is successfull, move all other mailboxes from the old server to the new server.

Questions:
1- Are steps 5-8 the best way to go about this?
2- If test in step 5 fails can I run dcpromo on the new server to move the FSMO roles back to the old server?

Thanks,
Mehran
