first thing i tried actually. the system does have full access.
And all services pointing to correct location?
ASKER
yeah. everything was running fine until last night. installed trend micro's scan mail. came in the morning to find that it had scanned some 90,000 e-mails. none of which went to users.
i rebooted the server to have the information store stop. removed scanmail..
i've checked the integrity of the store and defragged without any errors

What other messages are you getting in event viewer?
ASKER
under "system" that's the only one. besides notice that services have started.
under "application" i'm getting a warning (which i've had since our old mail server went down couple weeks ago)
event ID 958 "Following master server DN appears to be ointing t a deleted object. This may prevent Exchange Routing Service from functioning propertly. Please check your DS setting...."
under security event ID 577.
failure audit "LsaRegisterLogonProcess() "

thank much to emptyone. kris, thanks too. we don't have any child domains but that was the same error.
I had the same problem. After upgrading an Exchange 2000 server to Exchange 2003, the Information Store would not start. By going to HKLM\System\CurrentControl Set\Servic es\MSExcha ngeIS\Viru sScan, And setting Enabled to 0. After that, the IS will start, but, after it starts, it sets Enabled to 1 again, and won't restart again. Any ideas?
I too had the same issue with changing the virusscan registry entry to get Exchange to start, anyone have a solution to above listed issue?

Your problem is that the TrendMicro AV uses the wrong version of VSAPI (probably to high) to scan viruses. You should install an older version or switch to another AV - ex Bitdefender
Had the same problem on my server, experienced this right after installing CA etrust 8.1 on a sbs server.
Killed all the processes related to etrust, and disabled realtime monitoring but that didn't fix it.
This did:
Look for the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ CurrentCon trolSet\Se rvices\MSE xchangeIS\ VirusScan and set "Enabled" to a value of 0. Start the exchange services.
