Question

Restore deleted Public Folder

Asked by: Makr_Watson27

We have an Exchange 2000 Server running on Windows 2000 Server which is being backed up using Veritas Backup Exec 9.1
A folder and subfolders have been deleted and we need to restore them.
I want to restore the folder and then replay the transaction logs to get everything that has changed since the backup up until the point it was deleted.

How do I go about this?

I did not check out the links but I do have a comment.
You said "I want to restore the folder and then replay the transaction logs to get everything that has changed since the backup up until the point it was deleted."

If you restore the Public folder store from the last backup, all the logfiles since then will replay. This means the deletion will replay also. there is no way to selectively replay logfile transactions.

Thanks for the links, but they are for full restores.
My particular problem is how to restore a deleted Public Folder and then replay the log files to a point in time before the deletion.
Before anyone asks I don't have the 'Keep deleted items for' setting on the Public Folder Store

Exchange_Admin:  You posted just before me, so I can't do what I want then?  I take it I can't just delete a bunch of transaction log files after the deletion time and then restore ;) ?

That's not entirely true.  When you do a restore, Exchange is aware of the log files that are in place with the restore.  You MAY be able to delete log files by renaming the last usable log file to be the E00.log (or whatever the appropriate name for your database is) - but it isn't guaranteed to work, as it did with Exchange 5.5 - and if you're doing this on your production network, it can be risky.

If it doesn't work, you have a few other options - such as repairing the now non-mountable restore with the eseutil utility.  Are you performing this on a recovery server or on the production server?  That makes a big difference.

Unfortunately its a production server

Here's what I would do - and it's just a suggestion to be thrown out if you don't like it.

Stop the SMTP service.
Restore the public folder store.  Do not replay the log files.  Mount the store.

Open Outlook, and Export the folder and subfolder you are missing.

Restore the public folder store again, this time playing through the log files completely.  Obviously, the folders are again going to be deleted - however, you can import them back in once the store is mounted.

Now, restart the SMTP service.

You obviously haven't recovered everything, since you didn't play the log files before exporting, but you've been able to recover some of the data and return your network to it's current condition, which is stable.

If that's a possibility at all, be sure you keep a safe copy of ALL log files out of the appropriate MDBDATA folder during the first portion so they can be written back during the second restore.

Again, just my two cents - hope it helps.

Build a recovery machine and restore the backup to it.
Then Export the public folder to a pst.
This PSt can then be imported back into the production server.

Since I'm based in the UK and I have everyone coming into to work this morning, I have already decided to lose the changes made to this folder since the last backup.
The original question was to see if I could use the transaction logs to restore a Public Folder and its subfolders to a point in time after the backup but before the deletion of said folder.
I wish I had the luxury of time to test knikkij suggestion of deleting and renaming transaction logs, but as it stands I don't

Unless anyone had any objections I will leave this open for 48 hours to gain suggestions then point split.

Thanks
Mark

With Backup Exec 9.1 you can backup individual public folders instead of the entire store it you choose to.  From that point on, you can just restore the individual folder from tape if need be.

Having the same problem and trying to use restore.

I once did this simply by going to a Remote User's computer / One that was Offline.  Opened their Outlook and made a copy of the Public Folder into their mailbox  (The deleted Public Folder was still there for Offline Use, since it was not on the network via VPN/Logon and syncing).  Then, logged into the network.  Of course, the public folder vanished upon Sync, but then I copied the Copy i had made before sync, to the Public Folders.

You can use the Microsoft PFDAVAdmin tool to recover Public Folders.  See the below link for more information on downloading the tool and how to use it:
