Question

Forwarding/Routing Exchange 2003 Email

Asked by: pcthelp

Hi,

We have an awkward email scenario that is giving us and our client some problems. The email is configured as follows...

Our client has a domain (i.e. client.com) and an associated 'hosted' web server, which handles email for the domain. Furthermore, our client has an office server running SBS 2003 and Exchange 2003 (the office domain is configured as client.local and not client.com).
We have set-up the Exchange Server to accept POP3 (to handle incoming email from the web server) and set-up SMTP to handle email being sent to receiptants via an ISP. Note that the web and office server are in two geographically different locations. This is where the problem comes into view...

Our client as several home-based employess (i.e. Mr. Joe Bloggs) who directly talk to the web server to collect their email (i.e. joe.bloggs@client.com), thus bypassing the office server, they use their own ISP internet connection for this.
Sometimes these employees our in the office and therefore logon to the office domain (but there's no need for email access whilst they are in the office). However, the company secretary (who has an Logon/Exchange account and uses Outlook 2003 in the office) wants to email 'Mr. Joe Bloggs' and can't. The secretary gets an email back stating that the receiptant cannot be found on the office domain.

Can anyone shed any light on a solution to the problem above. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

simple.u must have two policies enabled on ur exchange
1-@urdomain.com
2-@urdomain.local

in ur @domain.com recipient policy email addresses smtp section now u can
uncheck the box that states this server is responsible for mail delivery bla bal.
once u do that now ur employess can send mail to ur isp which is hosting the
same domain name.
PS:u can create the second policy in ur default recipient policy if u like.
urdomain.com recipient policy must be applied as primary smtp address to all ur
users.

Didn't work, or I've done something wrong. Perhaps further detailed instructions are required...

Default Policy (Properties)
(TICKED) SMTP  @client.com
(TICKED) SMTP  @client.local
(TICKED) X400   c=US; a= ; p=CLIENTSERVER;o=Exchange;

I was able to go into the Edit SMTP @client.com Screen- but could untick the option inside cause it was greyed out.

I can untick only SMTP @client.local - but that still bring back mail as undeliverable (see sample message below):

TEST EMAIL BEGIN ===========================
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: Test
Sent: 19/07/2004 23:36

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

  testinbox@client.com on 19/07/2004 23:36
The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the recipient directly to find out the correct address.
  <client.com #5.1.1>
TEST EMAIL END ===========================

TestInbox does not exist on the office server, but does on the web server.

I tried replacing @client.com with @myclientsisp.com but that didn't work either (BTW: smtp.myclientsisp.com refers to the ISP my client uses).

Can you give any further help on this one? Cheers.

if the option is grayed out that means it is the primary smtp address.
make local.yourdomain.com ur primary then go to yourdomain.com(which will
be in small fonts)and uncheck the box.once u unckeck the box change places
again(make yourdomain.com the primary).
once u uncheck that box then u can send mail to all ur users(including the ones
that are hosted on ur isp mail server).
after any change it is good idea to restart server.
call back if u still have problem.

Change made as suggested but no luck, messages are still coming back as undeliverable - but only those sent to @client.com that are not mailboxes on the domain. Any thoughts?

Not mailboxes on the office server (local domain) that is ;-)

pcthelp that is the little trick that will allow ur exchange let go of emails for ur
domain that are not listed on AD.
once u create a recipient policy lets say @abc.com ur exchange wont let go of
any email that he can put his hands on destined for that domain so the trick is to
uncheck the box i mentiond and when exchange does not find a match for the
user he will forward it to where u usually forwards ur emails(through smtp server
or smtp connector).
does ur exchange have internet connection?
do u have smtp connector setup with smart host(not neccessary if u have smtp
server but it wont hurt).
call back i will be here for a while.

Almost there, we've got one half of the problem sorted. Sending to to email addresses that are not present in AD is working.

However, several remote employees have username logins - these match their email addresses. By remote, I mean that they both VPN into the network and sometime they are at the office.

I removed their exchange mailbox in AD, thinking that if I email them from inside the network it will be sent out givin the new policy - this doesn't seem to be the case. I get the email back stating undelilverable 'the e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to'. Example user/email:

SBS 2003 User/logon Name: client.local\Joe.Bloggs
Web Server Email Address: joe.bloggs@client.com

Any thoughts? Cheers for the help so far!!  :-)

PS: If you know or know of anyone in EE that know how to deal with configuration of Cisco PIX 501 Firewalls, please let me know!!!

pcthelp i need more help from u in this one.
u have some users that VPN in to ur network and use their UPN(user priciple name)
such as mike@urdomain.com and they have or had a mailbox on the exchange
with the smtp address mike@urdomain.com and u ended up deleteing the mailbox
but not the user.u must have created a mailbox on the isp box and now that u try
to send email it does not get delivered because the user exist on the AD but not
an smtp address and exchange does not let go of the email because the user exist.
is this ur case?

by: VahikPosted on 2004-07-19 at 21:40:35ID: 11589810

ok try this eventhough it may cause a loop
go to ur smtp server properties page\messages and under
"forward all mail with unresolved recipients to host"
and put the FQDN of ur isp's smtp server and see if ur problem is solved.

Got it sorted! Had to go back to the Server Management interface and redo the Internet Setup in conjunction with your instructions. An awkward solution, but I'm sure it wasn't as awkward as the problem ;-)
Cheers!

I am having exactly the same issue with a new server installation.  Any chance you could post exactly what resolved it so that I can check my setup.

I have tried the things mentioned in here but I am often getting a message looping error message from my E-mail service provider...
