Question

Reverse DNS problem

Asked by: nexcool

What are they refrencing to

Hello,

Thank you for contacting the SBC Internet Services Security department.

We do not accept mail from IPs that have reverse DNS of   unless the mail goes through that ISPs SMTP outbound server.  If your IP is static, have your reverse DNS changed to reflect your company or domain name.

Sincerely,
SBCIS

Give me some detail about your email .. do you use an ISP for email or do you have a network with an email server of your own .. Do you host your own DNS or does your ISP host your DNS? Many companies will not accept email from you if your IP address does not properly trace back to your mail host and domain name .. This is one way of reducing spam .. An article explaining:

http://www.dnsstuff.com/info/revdns.htm

If your DNS is hosted by your ISP you can call them and request that they add a reverse look up record ..

i have my own email server through comcast, and i also host my own sites.  I have custom DNS setting through dyndns.org.

Then this is why. Alot of companies will not accept email from a dynamic IP address. One way around this is to configure your SMTP Virtual Server to deliver email to a smarthost. This smarthost would be your ISP's mail server.

I do have a static IP.

OK good. Chadwhite (above) explained it well and gave a good link.
Do you have a reverse DNS record configured at dyndns.org?
If not then configure one.

More and more companies are rejecting emails if there is not a Reverse DNS record configured.

AOL is especially bad about this.

Excerpt from the dyndns.org FAQ:
Some ISPs, like AOL, are blocking my e-mail - what can I do about this?
Many providers block e-mail coming from a dynamic IP address. To solve this, you can relay all of your outgoing e-mail through your ISP's mail server. Simply set the SMTP/outgoing mail server in your e-mail client, or use an option in your local mail server such as Sendmail's "smarthost" option to force all mail to be relayed through that server. Consult your application or server's documentation for more specific details of how to do this. If your ISP does not provide a server for relaying, or if you need to relay while outside your ISP's network, check out our MailHopSM Outbound service.

What this means is that you need an A record for the mail server's IP, the IP registered as a PTR record, and an MX record that names the mail servers A record name

A: mail.bobchristian.com
PTR:  69.68.67.10
MX: mail.bobchristian.com  Cost: 10

You need to ask your ISP to setup the reverse DNS. It is the people responsible for the IP address, not your domain who do this - if the ISP says different ask to speak to someone with a clue.
However, if you are on any kind of residental service, or low cost business service then they probably will not setup the reverse DNS for you.

If this is the case then you will need to use an SMTP Connector to route the email through your ISPs SMTP server. More information on setting this up here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/smtp-connector.asp
