Question

Reported Mailbox Sizes in Exchange System Manager Incorrect

Asked by: RomualPiecyk

I have a number of mailboxes on my mailbox store that are reporting huges sizes - 5gb, 3gb, 2gb - but their actual sizes are much less.

is this an indication that I  need to somehow compress my database for this store, perhaps with eseutil? Any thoughts or experiences with this will be greatly appreciated.

what do you mean by "Much less"?

Could this be an issue of Physical size vs. logical space?

What makes you say their 'actual' sizes are less? how do you know this?

The only thin which would typically indicate that it is time to defragment the IS is the data reported in the Application Log: Event ID 1221 which says "The database has nnn megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated."  Make sure you are looking at the Private IS, because this event is reported for both the Private and Public IS.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about.

I have one user that when I look in ESM, his mailbox is reported as 5.2Gb. When I look at the properties of his Outlook Today folder and view Folder Size, his mailbox is reported as 1.3Gb.

As added information, his Deleted Items folder is only 95mb.

This is the case with several of my users on this store.

I found that to be an issue with a user a few months ago.  I did maintenance on the Exchange database but it didn't help.  Finally I used exmerge to make a copy of the mailbox, deleted the mailbox, used exmerge to restore the mailbox and the size showed as being correct.  Don't know why...but it worked.

First Question:
Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003?
This may (but should not be) caused by the Deleted Item retention time

The command would actually be isinteg -s <servername> -fix -test alltests .  That command should recalculate the mailbox sizes.

If that does not work, and you are on Exchange 2000 SP3, there was a rollup and a hotfix

What's the latest on this???  For what it's worth I ran isinteg on my issue and it didn't solve the problem.  If it does fix your problem it is certainly easier and less stressful than deleting a mailbox and restoring it using exmerge.
