The multiple addresses shouldn't matter. I have about 30 on various domains and various name conventions on my account and can receive email on all of those addresses.
If the user wants to use john@ for their email address then you should use that as the primary email address so that his messages go out using that address.
Is it always the same email addresses that are generating this error?
