Question

POP3 Downloads Stall After Certain Number of Messages w/ Exchange 2003

Asked by: beatmix01

Firstly, I am running Exchange 2003 w/SP1 on Dell Hardware
This problem has puzzled me to no end.  Essentially, what happened starting last weekend is an issue when downloading from Exchange via POP3.
This problem occurs both on the LAN and when trying to pick up the mail over the internet.

We have two email addresses that we need to download frequently off the server, one mail box is the journaling mail box, the other is where all spam goes to.

Mail starts downloading ok, and then it just stops usually around 60 messages or so. ( The number changes though.) I have tried downloading mail from many different computers and mail clients and the same thing occurs. There are no errors reported in Event Viewer on the server.

Messages I recieve in Outlook Express when checking - Your POP3 Server has not responded in 60 seconds. Would You LIke to wait another 60 seconds for the server to respond.  Your options are Wait or Stop.

If you choose wait it continues to do this to ask you the same question.

I have done a TCP dump w/ Etherreal and notice many [TCP Checksum Incorrect] messages...
It seems that when I delete the message it gets stuck on it continues w/ the download.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like classic spam problems to me.
Spam messages are often not created quite right and can cause problems.
AV and Antispam scanners can also cause problems with the way that they scan the message and insert their tag.

The number of messages will not be the problem - it will be occurring when the POP3 application hits one of these corrupt messages.
Your best move would be to stop them from even hitting the Exchange server by the means of some kind of spam filter that sits outside your Exchange server.

Well I have Symantec Mail Security for MS Exchange 4.6 Running on the Mail Server... and that is what is dumping the Spam to that mail folder.

The part that is still interesting is the mailbox that is associated w/ mail journaling is also having problems downloading via pop3 and that box recieves hardly any spam.

It was working fine up until the end of last week.

Well I figured out how to resolve it.  I turned on the advanced message envelope feature and now its all set.
