Hi,
I am importing a large number of contacts into a range of global distribution groups in AD on Windows & Exchange 2003 using LDIF, all groups are in a parent OU, MasterGAL
My import Distinguished Name looks like this (names changed for security)- from the error log:
Entry DN: CN=anemail,cn=group1,ou=Ma
..
The error is:
Add error on line 1: Naming Violation
The server side error is "The object cannot be added because the parent is not on the list of possible superiors."
Can anyone help with this ?
I create the groups and parent OU beforehand using vbscript.

What I have is a group within an OU.
ie: the OU is MasterGAL, the group within it is group1
I am using LDIFDE to add contact objects to the group (which is in the OU).
The line above is the Distinguished name for the object.
eg:
dn: CN=MartinJEaves,cn=group1,
Any help would be much appreciated!
Oh I think I see, you cannot add members to a group by trying to make it a child object of the group. Instead use this syntax:
dn: cn=group1,ou=MasterGAL,dc=
changetype: modify
add: member
member: cn=MartinJEaves,<rest of contact DN here>
member: cn=User2,<rest of contact DN here>

This should import and update the membership of the group, assuming the user DN's for member are correct and the DN of the group is correct.

One thing I notice is cn=anemail,cn=group1. Is this supposed to be cn=anemail,ou=group1? Unless you explicitly created a container called group1 (not OU, container) and the explictly create a child container called anemail then this naming doesn't look correct.
