Question

MS Q266418, MAPi file

Asked by: dakeys

ALright, I just finished installing exchange 2003 on my SBS server. This is the error I got at the end of the install and alsowhen I try to open System Manager:

"Exchange detected that "D:\Windows.0\system32\MAPI32.dll" is not the correct version to run exchange system manager or Exchange Server 2003. This may cause failure in Exchange System manager, affect availability of your server or both.
For more information see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q266418 at http:\\support.microsoft.com."

I check the article and it does not mention how to resolve the issue, or at least I'm not understanding how to do it.

I had outlook install on my machine but I removed it.

you need to get the correct version of mapi32.dll on your machine

i also just recently installed a 2003 sbs server, and had the same problem (i didnt install outlook, but reinstalled exchange which appears to give the same error, at least during installtion)

my solution, format and reinstall - sure it is overkill, but i will be nursing this server over the next 4 years with any luck - and i dont want 2 hours of laziness to be the reason why i have a problem later down the line.

in your case, if you dont want to format (which i would anyway, considering this isnt your first install on that server (the d:\windows.0 was a give-away)) just uninstall and reinstall exchange.

go to control panel, add remove programs, select Small Business Server, select change, select exchange server, select uninstall, hit next and away you go

good luck

Try this

Check the version of MAPI32.dll (6.5.6944.0).  If not you can copy the file from Exchange CD.

From c:\<current windows dir>\system32\regsvr32 /u mapi32.dll
Then c:\<current windows dir>\system32\regsvr32 mapi32.dll

I don't get it, what do you mean by "the d:\windows.0 was a give-away)) just uninstall and reinstall exchange."

this isnt the first time you installed windows on that server is it?

when windows install finds another \windows folder - it will add a .0 to the end of the folder it is installing to (or .000 version depending)

I subscribe to the theory that if you are building a server that is not yet in production (obviously) and there is a problem with it, format and reinstall.  lingering issues from incorrect configuration during installation are painfully difficult to fix.

If you have the time, format the server - if you dont, uninstall and reinstall exchange (it is an option on the SBS cd's, trust me, i did it yesterday :))
