Information Store problems in Exchange 2003

I've read that these issues are sometimes related to virus scanners on the server, but that is not the case with me.   We aren't running one on this server at this time.   Does anyone have an idea of where to start resolving this?   MS reports that there are no hotfixes that have been released since SP2.

have you read or seen this doc ?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;872963

and also have you tried to reinstall exchange SP2 ?

I have seen the document, but it pertains to SP1 and I'm at SP2.  The hotfix listed is already rolled up in SP2.

No, I haven't tried to reinstall SP2.   Given the fact that this server is used heavily, I'm trying to avoid shotgun troubleshooting this one.   Any other ideas?

Nope, no errors referring to IIs that I can see in the event log.

AV is the first target for problems like this - but it is usually caused by a third party application of any kind that could interface with Exchange - backup, antispam etc.

This is a very barebones server.   The only non-exchange software on this server is Tivoli.  The three store.exe crashes we've had were a 6:30pm, 3:00am, & 11:00am (not all the same day).    Since our Tivoli runs nightly and the problem is not limited to the night I'm leaning away from that as a possible culprit.  Any other ideas?

Failures in store.exe on a bare machine are very unusual. Most of them are caused by third party applications.
As such the reinstall of Exchange 2003 SP2 is something that I would suggest as being something that might fix it.
After installing the service pack, make sure that the server is up to date - there have been some updates to store.exe since the release of the service pack.

That's interesting.  I was told by Microsoft that SP2 contains the latest updates for everything.    Where can I find these new versions of store.exe?  Maybe that will fix my problem.

They come down in updates from WSUS or Microsoft Update (not Windows update). There have been three or four that I can recall - maybe more.

Exchange 2003 SP2 is 12 months old, so it will not contain the latest of everything.

Thanks for the info.   I guess even Microsoft can't find good help nowadays.   I'm doing a check to see what updates I'm missing.
Hopefully something ops up as a likely candidate.

According to my WSUS server, the only "Update for Exchange Server" that hasn't been applied is KB911829 which is for Web client issues.  No other items identify themselves as Exchange updates.    I'm not exactly up to date on all Windows Server security items, but that's a different story.  I also don't see any updates that have been applied that  since SP2.   You wouldn't happen to have any KB numbers of store.exe updates since SP2 was released would you?

On my home Exchange server it has flagged four updates for Exchange

KB907747 (monthly IMF update)
KB912442 (Security update)
KB916803 (Security update)
KB911829 (Exchange Update).

916803 is the major one. That introduced the Send As behaviour change.
