Cannot open Outlook profile - unable to open default e-mail folders. you must connect to your ms exchange server computer with the current profile before you can syncronize your folders...

Hi,

We currently have the one exchange server running exchange 2003 and the client is running oulook 2003.  They were running fine up until a couple of days ago and then a couple of users from the same remote office get the above error message.

Any ideas????

Check the firewall (Windows Firwall / antivirus blocking ports / Hardware firewall) due to which there not able to connect Exchange server. for Outlook (you need to open TCP port 135 - RPC port).

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278339

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256976

You may have to check required ports are not blocked by ISP.

Hi Vishal,

Thanx for your feedback! :-)

I can confirm that port 135 is open to allow outlook traffic as other users from the remote office are able to use their email facility from the same server located at our site.

The port is also enabled at the ISP end so as far as network functionality is concerned, it is ok ....

When the users in question logon to other PC's in the office same issue.  When other users logon to these respective users pc, they are ok....This is causing me headache lol

Could it be permission issues with respective mailboxes?  These too have been checked and seem consistent?

Please advise...
Fine with ISP side - but have you checked with Windows firewall ?? Which anti virus you are using on these workstations ??

Vishal,

Is it not true that if there were any issues with the firewall, albeit windows and AV config that it would also block other users that logged onto the machines in question?

I have logged on as the users, locally on-site where I am based and the same issue...unable to open default email folders.  The users are utilising a VPN connection from the remote site, therefore the port, firewall issues need not apply.

This is a confusing one.......
are you able to open the mailboxes of these users by using your login details?
are you able to open the mailboxes of these users locally (in the same LAN as the server) by using ur id and the user's id?

the answer is no to both of your suggestions, which I have already tried prior to posting on here :( lol

I cannot open the mailboxes from my outlook client and locally on the same LAN as the server (which is where I am too - on the same LAN as the server)

....Keep them ideas comming please :-)
take a ldp dump of a working user and a ldp dump of a non-working user and compare them. if the user is not able to open the mailbox locally also then there seems to be something wrong with the user's account/mailbox.

rakesh,

I too am under the impression that there is possibly an issue(s) with these user accounts/mailboxes.  How can I perform a ldp dump of a working and a non-working user.  excuse my ignorance....
you can check the following article for the steps. follow the first method

Many Thanx for that Rakesh...

FYI...I have located some info in the EVL on xchange server for these two particular users:

Mapi session
"/o=Scope/ou=SCOPEHQ/cn=Recipients/cn=*******" exceeded the maximum of 32 objects of type "session".

where ******** = user

I will try and investigate this error further after your suggestion, but if anyone is the wiser, please enlighten :)
The following article describes what you are facing

Rakesh,

I have taken an ldp dump of a functional user against one of the non-functional users and made a comparison.  I cant see anything that stands out.....Is there anything specific I should be looking for?

Secondly,

The resolution in the srticle 842022 has not resolved the issue.

This is fast becoming a priority and I am no the wiser

Any further assists will be greatly appreciated

what value have you configured in the registry for "Maximum Allowed Sessions Per User"
Avatar of S300BYY

ASKER

rakesh,

I set the value for this reg key to 50 considering that the default is 32 and I didnt want to affect the functionality of exchange box so a conservative fig ure (50) was used.  Should it be higher?
Were any Exchange services restarted after this change?
Are you getting event id 9646?
Have you applied SP2 for Exchange 2003?
Avatar of S300BYY

ASKER

rakesh,

I havent restarted the exchange services after the entry of the REG Key as I dont want to disrupt the exchange service to all clients...I will perform this though Out Of Hours later today....

Yes I am recieving event id 9646 errors for respective users (two)

We have exchange 2003 with SP2 (Build 7638.2 sp2)

Any specific exchange services or all of them? and in any particular order in restarting the services?

you can stop all the services one by one and then restart them.

Rakesh,

The exchange server was restarted yesterday evening due to hardware configuration change i.e. more disk space.  I saw that the respective users had over the default 32 sessions in ESM logged???!!!  .... (Admin Groups - Domain - Servers - <Servername> - Storage Group - logons).

Unfortunately in ESM you cannot remove these connections and I was gonna try using the TCPVIEW utility from SYSINTERNALS but that never happened, due to server restart.  The users are ok now.....

Although the issue has been seemingly resolved, I need to clarify what, why, etc etc, for knowledge purposes, if anything.  Can I diagnose fault?????

p.s. I have removed the maximum mapi sessions per user entry in the registry too.
i don't have much idea about why this happened
