My config and my mandate:
- SBS 2003 SP1 DC running Exchange SP2.
- 2003 R2 member server that will be the Terminal Server for all users.
- 20 Win XP Pro SP2 clients that will run as basically "thin" clients as they will have an ultra restrictive local GPO and will only be used to log onto the term server.
- All 20 clients currently run Office 2003 with POP3 hosted domain mail.
I need to configure the new user accounts on the Term Server so that each user's Outlook profile is an Exchange account without fully migrating to Exchange. Ill explain
I plan to use the SBS 2003 POP Forward settings to receive mail from the POP3 host for each user.
So the Exchange account will have the incoming mail from the POP forwarders. Their calendars, contacts and incoming mail will be available via OWA. They will have access to company public folders, shared calendars and 2 mail enabled public folders that are the repository for every FAX received over 4 FAX lines 9that also print simultaneously on a bank of laser printers).
So here is my only caveat:
Sending mail via the POP accounts.
I suppose I could simply add the POP accounts to each users profile. But would I not then be receiving all incoming mail from each (Exchange POP connector and the POP account). Thus duplicates of every email.
I have been lobbying for the full Exchange migration but this is all I have been approved to do right now.
Users will have the exact same e-mail addresses in Exchange as they currently use for the XO POP accounts. DNS for mail.ourdomain.com will still point to the XO POP3 servers.
QUESTION: Do I even need the POP accounts in Outlook to send?
Will the SMTP service in Exchange be enough to send mail?
What then would happen to replies to mail send directly from Exchange if the DNS for those addresses points to the POP server?
Just trying to hash this one out before I am on site tomorrow.
Any input would be welcome except telling me that I should just migrate all the way to Exchange. That was my answer to begin with. It is out of my hands but totally my responsibility.
Thanks,
