Exchange 2003/2007 migration SMTP question

We are in the process of migrating from MS Exchange 2003 to MS Exchange 2007.  Everything seems to work between the two servers except that users on the Exchange 2007 server cannot send email to the internet.  Users on the Exchange 2007 server can receive email from the internet and send/receive from users on the Exchange 2003 server.  

I set up a SMTP send connector on the Exchange 2007 server and I was able to send to the internet from the Exchange 2007 server, but users on the Exchange 2003 server could not anymore.

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?
