Do I have to have a Blackberry Enterprise server for this?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI am contemplating purchasing a Blackberry (8830) and am unable to find any documentation as far as configuring this device for my Corporate Mailbox, which is hosted on a Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2 server. I will be purchasing this Blacberry through Verizon as well. What needs to be done on the server-side, to enable a connection?

You don't have to have a BES, but if you don't then you will not get the full feature set. Without a BES there is no over the air calendar or contact sync. All you will get is the ability to pull email from Exchange via POP3 or IMAP. You don't get any integration with Exchange at all.
If you don't want to install BES but want integration then buy a Windows Mobile device.

Blackberry 8830 is one sweet device! I have one, and wife doesn't like that Curve as much as she likes mine! :)
You can do POP or IMAP to the server, but thats pull only, not push like with a BES. Outlook Mobile Access is available and supposedly works, but the boss likes the BES so are still with it. I've had this link bookmarked for awhile.

Let me be a bit detailed:
1. If you to install a BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express (BES Express) that will give you the following advantages
a. Instant Push email
b. Both way reconcile (any mail sent/receive from the pc gets a copy to the BB and vice versa)
c. Over The Air Filter setup option
d. Smooth service
But for only 1 BlackBerry, installing and configuring would be a hassle. Instead you can use BlackBerry Internet System. For BIS, you need a POP/IMAP/OWA account. For your OWA, I don't know if Exchange 2003 SP2 has any issue or not, but if it does, just allow a BIS to access your corporate mailbox via IMAP and that will give you max service.
The downside of BIS over BES is:
1. Not instant, it got a 10-20 min pulling time
2. From handheld to mailbox sent mail save is only possible for OWA (Outlook Web Access) Infact, if you check blackberry's knowledge base article KB05133 then it'd clear all up.
Advantage of BIS - it's free. If a little bit of time is spent (a few hour) to configure your BlackBerry with the mail server and your PC, everything should be working quite fine. But at the end of the day, BES is fine mature wine where as BIS is your off the shelf red wine.
Have your pick :)
I don't think this is free anymore...
