Question

Blackberry and Exchange

Asked by: Trihimbulus

I am contemplating purchasing a Blackberry (8830) and am unable to find any documentation as far as configuring this device for my Corporate Mailbox, which is hosted on a Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2 server. I will be purchasing this Blacberry through Verizon as well. What needs to be done on the server-side, to enable a connection?

install blackberry enterprise server (express). http://www.blackberry.com/select/server/express.shtml

it is free for the first license and $99 for each additional license.  it gives you the full BES functionality with all features.

Once you purchase it simply use the install manual to install the software step by step.

Do I have to have a Blackberry Enterprise server for this?

by: northcidePosted on 2007-08-13 at 07:54:26ID: 19684579

yes you need it in order to install it :)

like i said, it is free for the first license and you dont have to pay for the server software until you have more than 15 users.

You don't have to have a BES, but if you don't then you will not get the full feature set. Without a BES there is no over the air calendar or contact sync. All you will get is the ability to pull email from Exchange via POP3 or IMAP. You don't get any integration with Exchange at all.
If you don't want to install BES but want integration then buy a Windows Mobile device.

Blackberry 8830 is one sweet device! I have one, and wife doesn't like that Curve as much as she likes mine! :)

You can do POP or IMAP to the server, but thats pull only, not push like with a BES. Outlook Mobile Access is available and supposedly works, but the boss likes the BES so are still with it. I've had this link bookmarked for awhile.

What a mistake Blackberry's are.  Why would anyone want one when its such a hassle to get Exchange to talk to it.  Stick with Windows Mobile and its simple...as it should be.

Its not a hassle. Its not a mistake if you know what you want before you go into it. Each has its strengths and weaknesses.

Let me be a bit detailed:
1. If you to install a BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express (BES Express) that will give you the following advantages
a. Instant Push email
b. Both way reconcile (any mail sent/receive from the pc gets a copy to the BB and vice versa)
c. Over The Air Filter setup option
d. Smooth service
But for only 1 BlackBerry, installing and configuring would be a hassle. Instead you can use BlackBerry Internet System. For BIS, you need a POP/IMAP/OWA account. For your OWA, I don't know if Exchange 2003 SP2 has any issue or not, but if it does, just allow a BIS to access your corporate mailbox via IMAP and that will give you max service.
The downside of BIS over BES is:
1. Not instant, it got a 10-20 min pulling time
2. From handheld to mailbox sent mail save is only possible for OWA (Outlook Web Access) Infact, if you check blackberry's knowledge base article KB05133 then it'd clear all up.

Advantage of BIS - it's free. If a little bit of time is spent (a few hour) to configure your BlackBerry with the mail server and your PC, everything should be working quite fine. But at the end of the day, BES is fine mature wine where as BIS is your off the shelf red wine.

Have your pick :)

I use BIS with OWA on Exchange 2003 on SBS 2003 R2.

cah28 - this is an old question and no one else will see your posting. If you are having problems then you should post a new question rather than trying to post to an old one.

It is still free, it simply has a new name and is buried on the RIM web site.
It is now known as Blackberry Professional Edition.
