Question

Exchange 2007 error - 451 4.4.0 DNS Query Failed

Asked by: museudf

Hi all

I have just setup a new Exchange 2007 mail platform. Everything is working fine internal and I have just configured my send connector to route emails out via my smart host (MessageLabs). When I send an external message I can see it in the queue viewer and I can see that its going to the right place but it sits there for about 8 minutes and then finaly does go and I see it in my hotmail/gmail inbox. During those 9 minutes I can see that it keeps retrying every now and then and in the last error field it says the following:

451 4.4.0 DNS Query Failed

Can anyone explain why this is happening. why does it take so long to send the email out and what is wrong with the DNS that is is complaining about.

Your help in this matter would be great.

many thanks

Which Name is it trying to lookup? Presumably the SmartHost?

Yes I presume so, It says the next domain hop is messagelabs.com and the delivery type is "smarthostconnectordelivery" status as retry and then in the last error is the error above. I think it retries about 3 times and then finaly goes out, so it takes about 8 or 9 minutes which is too long.

Hi,

Sorry, lost track of this one a bit. A few too many plumbers / electricians wandering around my house yesterday.

The entry for the SmartHost in the SMTP connector (or do you have it on the SMTP Server?); Does that correctly resolve back to an IP Address without delay?

The problem was internal DNS issue. Thanks for your help. Giving the points to chris-dent as he was pointing in the right direction.

What was your internal DNS issue.  I've got the same problem when sending to hotmail.com or aol.com only and some of our emails are getting flagged as spam.

I've seen the same problem before.  Firstly, make sure your firewall has an exception for DNS (UDP 53) and SMTP (TCP 25)If you cannot successfully ping the smart host and receive a reponse within a few seconds, I'd suggest clearing the cache of your Internal DNS Server then restarting the DNS Server service on your DC, and restarting Microsoft Exchange Transport Service too.

That should do it.

Was having the same problem. Followed all the steps listed here, Disabled IPv6 etc. and the suggestions by CESExchange. Once I restarted the METS all the stalled messages cleared the queue.
Thanks for the help!!

on hub set in EdgeSync - first... / network/ check Use the External DNS lookup settings...
next use start-edgesynchronization
on edge goto properties of edge transport server, external dns lookups and set "use network card dns setting" on y internet-conected card, ok and done :)
