NDR "#5.5.0 smtp;551" on Exchange 03

I have a client who gets the following NDR's when sending mail from his exchang server.
I have set up a reverse dns record domain.com.au which is the same as the domain he is sending from, it only happens to certain domains.

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

      Subject:      Test Email
      Sent:      20/09/2007 4:11 PM

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

      steve@*********ortstephens.com.au on 20/09/2007 4:11 PM
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.  Please contact your system administrator.
<*****.com.au #5.5.0 smtp;551 This is not a relay host - mail must be to or from host domain.>

That usually means the email is being sent to the wrong server. MX records could be wrong etc. You said this happens to a number of domains. Is the NDR text identical?

My instinct is that this is not a fault with your server or the configuration of your server, unless you are using the wrong smart host.

No smart host is being used, mail is sent from our server directly.

I will check with the client if it is the exact same NDR each time.
