The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Where are my messages, after POPing exchange?
Tags: exchange, 2003, email
We have an exchange 2003 server handling our emails.
For some users we can trace email messaging arriving and being dropped in the User's mailbox.

However when the user connects to their accounts with outlook (POP3), and retreives email some
messages are not showing.  They are not in the "Junk Mail" folder, and not on OWA either.

Could someone tell me what may be happening?  Where are these emails? Is there a way to trace the activity on the POP3 service for 1 account?

Thanks very much

You can enable logging for POP in Exchange 2003 as follows:

ESM -> Right-click on server -> Properties -> Diagnostic Logging, select
POP services (POP3Svc) and enable it there. The results show up in the Event logs.

Also check whether there are any client-side rules that may be redirecting certain messages to folders other than the Inbox.

Why are you using POP3 at all?

09.26.2007 at 01:58AM PDT, ID: 19961488
We are using POP3 for some users because they travel and don't always have access to the Exchange server through either VPN or internally networking.  Also, these users are using outlook offline and need access to their emails, thus they are not using OWA.

09.26.2007 at 03:04AM PDT, ID: 19961715
Wellll, if these users haven't set the "leave mail on server" option to "yes", the messages are deleted from the server and exist only on the client machines.

That is right, except that I cannot find these emails anywhere in the client's Outlook files.
Per r-k I enabled the logging for POP3 on exchange and will see what I get out of that.

So what if they travel?

I would be getting them to use RPC/HTTP

It is the full outlook client, without a VPN - and keeps mail offline, just like outlook.

Trust me, you don't want to be using POP3.

redseatechnologies thanks for the information.  I have done some testing on this (RPC/HTTP).
Excuse my lack of knowledge in this yet (much to read still) but I am having problem with setting up the certificate.  Do I have to puchase a certificate or can I create one internally?

Also you stated "you don't want be using POP3".  Could you give me a few reasons or point me to docs illustrating this?

It is easier if you purchase a certificate, you can do so from here (among other places) http://www.certificatesforexchange.com

You *could* create on internally, but it makes things more difficult.

Buying one will cost about $20, creating one internally could add hours to the project...

Review this for more information on what you want to be doing -> http://www.amset.info/exchange/rpc-http.asp

A few reasons to not use POP3;
Insecure
Slow
Removes mail from the store
No centralised management/synchronisation

The key difference between using RPC/HTTP and POP3 is that RPC/HTTP is cleaner.  If your user is on the road and opens outlook - he can send and receive messages, he has the same signature, his sent items all go to the right place, he can access public folders, etc.  If he is using POP3, then it is not so easy.  Sent items will be in a PST file, no public folders, multiple profiles (adding complexity for the user)

I hope that explains it a bit more.
