The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Exchange Server 2000 looks fine, but won't send or recieve
Tags: microsoft, Exchange , 2000
I need help.  I had a problem this morning with an exchange server and the hard drive was full of log files, so I deleted them, and got all the services running again, and the store mounted.  However I was called back a few hours later becuase emails are not leaving the ouotbox, nor are they able to receive anything...

As far as I can tell everything looks fine, all the services are running, all the virtual servers (pop3, Imap, smtp) are running, but nothing is sending or recieving.  I do not even know where to begin to look, because it does not appear to have any problems....

EXCEPT IT JUST ISN'T WORKING....

I have restarted all the services, remounted the stores, and rebooted several times, I am at a loss.

Why did you delete the log files?
You shouldn't have done that, as Exchange still thinks they are there. If you need to gain space while you run a backup then you can compress the log files, but you shouldn't have deleted them.

You should be getting some errors in the event viewer when the server starts up. It could also be a damaged database. You will need to look at the tools for scanning the database for damage.

I have deleted the MDBDATA folder log files before in the past, and had no issues.  I also read in a post in this community to do so in order to get past an I/O error when mounting the Mailbox store

Not getting any errors on startup in the event viewer, all services are starting on their own.  All the virtual servers are starting on their own, ervrything looks good in the system manager, just not working...

The fact that you have done it before does not mean it was either the right thing to do or would continue to work when you did it again.
The bottom line is that the transaction logs are not designed to be deleted manually, they should only be removed by a backup. Exchange will still think they are there.

I would suggest that you start by reading this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=240145
It is about deleting the transaction logs and checking which logs are required.

However I cannot stress enough that you should not delete transaction logs manually - they are a core part of how Exchange is designed to work.

So why did you give me a C grade?
I suggest that you refer to the grading guidelines and then post in the customer support zone with a request to get the question opened and regraded fairly. If you don't, I will.

Hi,
Goto registry settings and check under HKLM----Software -----MicroSoft------RPC------Client Protocols and check for values under client protocols and if the value is not present enter rpcrt4.dll value for all the 4 client protocols and restart your machine and then press send and receive you will be able to send and receive emails.

I gave you the grade, points and the solution, because you tried to help me, even though you didn't really help, you just told me what I had done was wrong.  I figured it out on my own.  I was just closing the question, and I feel I gave the correct scoring.

I would have to disagree that it was the correct grade.
If you read the grading guidelines you will find that where you feel a C grade is appropriate that you should instead ask for the question to be deleted.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/help.jsp#hi97

I responded to the points that you raised. However if you resolved the problem yourself then you should have asked for the question to be closed and points refunded. I prefer that to happen than to have C grades on my record.

Simon.
