I am getting returned email with this message
#5.5.0 smtp;mx records inaccessible for too long for domain: whateverdomain.com=psmtp
the original email was generated internally and recieved internally.

That is not an Exchange message. So while the email may be internal, it isn't being generated by Exchange.
Of course that is presuming this is Exchange as you haven't provided any information on what you are using, and I am guessing due to the zone the question is in.

What is it being generated by if not exchange?  what info do you need to better understand the problem?
bounce message in its entirety minus any personal identifiabe info.

There was an smtp communications problem with the recipient's email server.  Please contact your System Administrator.

the email was sent again and went through no problem.
again this is an email sent from within the organization to an individual within the same organization.

This looks like you have a bottleneck on your Exchange server and/or DNS server that is causing the message to time out.  I've never seen that particular message before, and the 5.5.0 error is a pretty generic protocol error.  The fact that you tried to send again and it went through supports the bottleneck idea at least in theory.  Because the error specifically refers to your MX records, I would look first at your DNS server(s) to see if there is some connectivity or other issue causing a lag in response time.

Upon further investigation and reading event logs I found that this is a case of a misspelled email address.  Always remember... I before E except after C.

Hello, I got exactly the same error when I try to send an email to a specific external emailadress

Reporting-MTA: dns; server.domain.com

Final-Recipient: rfc822;user@domain.net
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 MX records inaccessible for too long for domain:domain.net
Remote-MTA: dns; outbound.senderdomain.com
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0

I found out, that the recipient domain has two mx records pointing to an identical IP adress.

does anybody have an idea why this error occurs?
