How do I hide Distribution List members in Exchange/Outlook 2003?

We have several distribution groups in our Exchange2003/Outlook2003 public address book. Normally, anyone can expand the group/list to see the members of the group. We have one distribution group that we do not want people to be able to see who is in the list. How is this setup?

One way is to email to BCC field.  That way nobody will see it altogether.

I am aware of using BCC: field, but that does not address my question at all. Thank you
You can hide the entry from the GAL itself, by checking the "Hide Group from Exchange Address Lists" checkbox in the Advanced tab under properties.  If it's hidden, folks can't look at the properties or expand it. However, if that's not desired, you would need to deny permissions to either Authenticated Users or some other catch-all group.

Thanks lollygagr. If I use deny permissions on a catch-all group, would that also prevent a user from sending an email to that group? I need a couple people to be able to use that group to send emails to.

lollygagr, can you briefly explain how to adjust the security permissions as you mentioned? Thanks

These links on my web page will help you secure the group and control who can send to the group:

lollygagr, I have tried what you described ("Hide Membership") but I am still able to see the membership list. It did not seem to do anything. Also, there is no Security Tab on the distribution list. I even tried changing it to a security group but still no security tab in the properties. Am I doing something wrong?

Perhaps I just need to wait a while for the effects of Hide Membership to propagate. Also I think that I do not have a security tab because of the fact that I ran the Hide Membership task. That is fine if eventually the members can no longer be seen.
If your clients are in cached mode then it can be 48 hours before the change is seen by the users.

Simon.
Sembee is correct about the lag in address list permission propagation in cached mode.  Also, remember if you don't see the security tab, you'll need to go to View - Advanced Features and check that option.  That will enable the tab to display.  If you're like me and get annoyed at having to remember to check that option to view security, you can create your own version of the ADUC mmc, enable advanced features, and save it so you don't have to keep remembering.  Extra tabs don't bug me.

Thanks for the tip about the View Advanced Features. I am now able to access the security tab. However, since I have hidden membership to the group I cannot change the security permissions. That is fine if the group membership is hidden but I am still able to view the group members in the Global address book. It has been several hours now. I am not running in cached mode and am directly on the network. I will wait I guess until tomorrow to see.

I just checked again this morning and the membership of the group was still visible in Outlook. Hiding the membership task had no effect. However, I then created a security group including all users except for the two that need to use and see the membership of the group, added this group to the security of the distribution group, and denied all access. This did work after I logged off and back onto windows.
