Question

Exchange 2007 Migration

Asked by: bsgabriel

I have installed a new Exchange 2007 Server and now need to remove my Exchange 2000 server.  I have all of my mailboxes migrated to Exchange 2007 and can send and recieve email, access calender and contacts while the Exchange Server 2000 server is powered down.

Does anyone have the process for removing Exchange Server 2000 in plain English?  What do I need to do to maintain the integrity of my Exchange organization and AD structure?

If you still have OL 2003 clients you need to make sure you Public folders/system folders are replicated.

have upgraded the recpient policy
OAB generation on 2007...etc

I am aware of that document but have the following question.  In the section titled "To Prepare Your Organization for Removal of the Last Exchange 2003 or 2000 Server"  Step 2 states to "Move all content from the public folder database on the legacy server to a public database on an Exchange 2007 server in the organization". My question is what am I moving and do I need to exercise any caution as not to overwrite anything on the new Exchange 2007 server?

by: ATIGPosted on 2007-12-27 at 11:49:48ID: 20536546

you are replicating any public folder data and system folder information.......

1. Do you use public folders now?
2. Do you still have Outlook 2003 clients?

If the answer is no then you do not need public folders for 2007 to function, if yes then you need to repliate that information.

MS have provided a script that can be found on your Exchange 2007 server in the scripts directory that will setup the replica and there is a remove script as well.

1.  The only features that we use are basic email, contacts, and calender.
2.  All my clients are Outlook 2003 so i realize that Exchange 2007 creates of public folder database for backwards compatablility.

When Exchange Server 2007 is installed it asks if you have any Outlook 2003 clients.  If you repsond that you do it creates the public folder database.  If I am not using public folders on Exchange 2000 (I do not think that I am) and Echange 2007 creates public folders for older Outlook clients I am wondering if I can just bypass this step.

by: ATIGPosted on 2007-12-27 at 12:11:08ID: 20536768

nope.... Exchange created the PF however it did not setup the replication... OL 2003 client pull free busy etc... from public folders OL 2007 no longer do that.

Technicall if you have no PF data then the free busy data will repopulate, better to be safe and its a simple task...

Yep then let that cook and later run ReplaceReplicaOnPFRecursive.ps1

by: ATIGPosted on 2007-12-27 at 13:47:13ID: 20537521

oops you only need the first one :P MoveAllReplicas.ps1

One other thing to note - as you coming off Exchange 2000, the public folder replication will take a while. Exchange 2000 PF replication is very conservative. You will need to leave it at least a week before you even consider removing the Exchange 2000 server.
Use item count on the public folders to see if the content is in sync.

When I attempt to run this command (MoveAllReplicas.ps1 -Server clarion02 -NewServer clarion06) I get an error message.  The error states the following "The term '.\ReplaceReplicaOnPFRecursive.ps1' is not recognized as a cmdlet, function, operable program or script file".

All I have done to is add the name of my local servers.  Also, when I run the script MoveAllReplicas.ps1 -Server Server01 -NewServer Server02 (without changing to my server names) the only error that I recieve is that it cannot find either of the servers on my DC.

So why does the command become invalid when I use my server names?

by: ATIGPosted on 2007-12-31 at 07:35:12ID: 20555414

I believe you need "./" not .\

by: bsgabrielPosted on 2007-12-31 at 07:41:21ID: 20555457

The / or \ is only displayed in the text of the error message not in the command iteself which is MoveAllReplicas.ps1 -Server Server01 -NewServer Server02

All i should have to do is insert the name of my exchange 2000 server in place of Server01 and insert the name of my exchange 2007 server in place of Server02.

Hi bsgabriel,

Can you please let me know how you got  the command below working? I am having the same issue, getting the same error message...

MoveAllReplicas.ps1 -Server Server01 -NewServer Server02

Thank you in advanced!!

jstevens73 - this is an old question. Unlike a forum it is not possible to "bump" questions back up the list. The only people who will see your post are those that have already participated. Instead you should post your question as a new question in the Exchange Server Zone which will allow other experts the chance to see the question and respond.
