My godfather runs a commercial appraisal company from his home. I administer his network, which consists of about 5 workstations running Windows XP SP2 and a server running Windows Server 2003. The server is a domain controller with Active Directory integrated DNS. All of the workstations are domain members receiving IP addresses through DHCP enabled on the server (obviously it is turned off on the router). He has a cable ISP (RoadRunner) with a dynamically assigned IP address. I have a D-Link DI-604 router and have enabled port forwarding for the DNS, SMTP, and POP3 protocols to the static IP of the server. I created a free DynDNS account (appraisalz.thruhere.net) but was a little stumped when it came to entering the MX Hostname under the Mail Routing section so I left it blank for now. When I promoted the server to a DC I created the domain name (joa.appraisal.local). In retrospect, I think I should have cut out the "appraisal" part, but I was green to AD and DNS then, and I'm obviously still a novice now (thank heavens for the experts). I installed Exchange 2003 after following the long pre-installation checklist to prep the domain and forest and enable the required protocols. I have never administered Exchange before, but I figured the best way to start is to start, right?
I want to use Exchange to send/receive both interoffice and internet email with the appended domain name of my choosing (username@something.com) instead of (username@joa.appraisal.lo
cal) but I'm not sure how to do this either. I also realize I have to setup SMTP and POP3 server names, but I don't know where to go or how to go about doing this.
I have gone as far as I can go and done everything I know how to do. Can ya'll please help me with the remaining steps?
I hope I have provided my information in a logical manner, and I apologize for any misuse of terms or if I omitted any information that might help you help me. I assure you the help you provide is greately appreciated and will be shared as freely as it was given.
PS - My godfather is having a conference call with Verio tomorrow morning to have them host his email and has asked me to be present. I would love to have this done before then as a sorta 'in yer face.' Thankx guys (and gals).
