The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

My Exchange 2003 Server cannot send messages to the bellsouth.net domain what is going on?
Tags: Reporting-MTA: Action: delayed Status: 4.4.7, Mail gateway IP (firewall) is registered with a different domain name with DYNDNS.org. Thus two domain names point to gateway IP.
My Exchange 2003 Server cannot send messages to the bellsouth.net domain. Queue reads "SMTP error". Messages return 4.4.7 error. Mail FROM bellsouth.net comes in fine. Is this a DNS issue, or could it relate to the DYDNS registration of the gateway IP?

Here is the exact NDR:

This is probably a DNS issue, you may want to try and bypass DNS by creating a dedicated SMTP connector with address space as "bellsouth.net" and smart host as any of the MX (IP) of bellsouth.net.

Non-authoritative answer:
bellsouth.net   MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = gateway-f1.isp.att.net
bellsouth.net   MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = gateway-f2.isp.att.net

gateway-f1.isp.att.net  internet address = 204.127.217.16
gateway-f2.isp.att.net  internet address = 207.115.11.16

They are not going to allow a remote host to use them as a smarthost, unless with the name change they lost all their marbles.

Do a reverse DNS check on yourself at dnsstuff.com or mxtoolbox.com to verify that your stuff is correct. They have some mail gateways that will severly throttle your inbound mail if your DNS and IPs are not matching.

I was not reffering to remote host using bellsouth as a smarthost, i was try to say that we should use the exchange server to directly send email to bellsouth bypassing the DNS.

This procedure is also in a way called smarthosting to a remote host, not to relay but to submit.

darkstar3d: Thanks! I see some problems here with my MX record. I will have to modify it to correct, however I can't do that immediately.

Exchgen: Could you elaborate on the procedure you refer to? Am I putting the bellsouth.net gateway ip in the "relay through smarthost" field, or am I creating that in the address space? If I am putting it in the address space, what do I put in the smarthost field? A step by step would help me out. I think this may be a good workaround, until I can correct the MX record issues.

Thank you both for your input, and please pardon my confusion.

- Get to the exchange system manage.
- Expan and drill down to routing groups.
- Click on connectors and right click create new SMTP connector.
- Give it a Name say (direct to Bellsouth), Under general select the option "forward all mail through this connector to the following smart host" and add the MX IP of bellsouth.
- Click on address space, click on add, click on SMTP, add bellsouth.net under "email domain" and leave the cost as 1.
- open command prompt and run "iisrest /noforce" for the setting to take effect.

This sould do it, its a DNS issue.

I doubt this is a DNS issue at all, if you are on a dynamic IP, bellsouth are no doubt blocking you because you have a poor reverse DNS entry.

Try to telnet from your server to one of the bellsouth servers listed above

telnet theirserver 25
ehlo
mail from:joe@wherever

I doubt it will get that far.

01.07.2008 at 06:35PM PST, ID: 20605495
Exchgen: appreciate the explanation, but it did not solve the problem. Thanks for the detailed procedure!
Kieran b: the port 25 telnet didn't work. Should I eliminate the dynamic dns reference to the gateway ip? Please note that the MX record for email is static. the dynamic FQDN is used for other services. If i do eliminate the dyndns record, how can I check and repair RDNS records?

Thanks for your insight.

How did telnet fail?  What was the error?

01.08.2008 at 03:46AM PST, ID: 20607649

Rank: Guru

Kieran is right, how telnet failed would give us a lot of info...

What level did it fail, "Mail from" or "RCPT TO" or when ending the message.

You may want to send an email to ipconfirm@postmaster.aol.com and confirm the connecting IP seen by the outside world of your organization.

Open nslookup or get to www.dnsstuff.com and confirm that the IP the world is seeing has a RDNS record, if not create one.

Kieran b:
Telnet failed immediately with the following:
550: [my ip address] blocked by ldap:ou=rblmx, dc=bellsouth.net, dc=net
550 see http://www.att.net/bls_rbl/ for information

Exchgen:
RDNS appears to be the problem. The situation becomes complicated at this point, as the domain owner has a web page hosted by a third party (not his isp) this is where the DNS record is maintained. The RDNS lookup returned a "no A record found" from the ISP. Apparently I need to take a close look at the MX record maintained by the third party. Here is the next (and hopefully last) stupid question: How and where do I create a RDNS record? I know this is beyond the scope of the posted question, so I understand if you don't wish to go any further with this.

Rank: Guru

Its fine to know a bit more at times, if it really does not hurt to respond.

if a remote domain is doing a RDNS query, it would do using a public DNS hosted on the internet. So in short you would need to create a RDNS record with the ISP hosting your MX record.

550 <0.0.0.0.> blocked by ldap:ou=rblmx, dc=bellsouth, dc=net
The sending system exhibited behavior associated with spammers and was blocked.
After taking steps to mitigate their spam or virus problems, the adminstrators of affected systems can send unblock requests from http://www.att.net/general-info/bls_info/block_admin.html

As per the ATT link you gave us, the 550 issue corrosponds to bellsouth blocking you deliberatly.

You should delist yourself from the link above and try sending email again, but of course i would ask you to get the RDNS fixed too.

Before you delist yourself, make sure you are not on a blacklist anywhere else.

You can do a blacklist check here -> http://www.dnsstuff.com

You should also do a DNS report here -> http://www.dnsreport.com

You are probably blacklisted because of the DNS issue. DNS is not something that can wait when it comes to mail.

crucio666, you can follow the advice above, but to get help with your specific situation, you MUST start a new question as per the rules.

Sorry darkstar 3d. I should have closed this yesterday. emailing bellsouth as per Exchgen's solution worked, although I have found DNS problems that may have caused the problem in the first place as a result of all of the examination. So thanks EVERYONE! I really appreiate your help

01.18.2008 at 01:31PM PST, ID: 20694391
This may help someone else that experiences this problem or one similar to it.

I also was not able to send to any email address ending in @bellsouth.net.  These messages just got stuck in the queue with the following error: "An SMTP protocol error has occurred"  After the preset time (2 days of retries) we get an NDR that says "This message was rejected due to the current administrative policy by the destination server."

As it turned out, after many hours of research and comparing notes with other networking professionals, we discovered that the problem was due to a reverse DNS lookup issue.   My domain had expired and during that time my Exchange server continued to send out SMTP traffic with a bellsouth.net destination address.  Because my domain was no longer pointed at my nameserver there was no Reverse DNS reply to bellsouth's server.  This triggered a IP block.

I was able to get the block lifted by submitting an email to postmaster@bellsouth.net

Hope this helps someone else.

BusterDuke,

You say that "I was able to get the block lifted by submitting an email to postmaster@bellsouth.net"   did you shoot that e-mail from the blocked e-mail or another?
