The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Outlook 2007 - Error accessing old mailbox "Cannot open your default e-mail folders." happened since installing a new server
Tags: Microsoft, Outlook, 2007, Trying to access old mailbox on an Exchange 2000 box
Hi guys, got a real doozy for you.

I am doing some work for a company and have installed a Windows 2003 SBS server to replace their old Windows 2000 / Exchange 2000 Server.  We setup the new server, created a new domain called "New-Domain" and kept the old server and domain "Old-Domain" live.  We then logged onto the old domain on all the individual workstations and exported their Outlook emails to a PST file which we kept on each machines C drive root. We then added the PC's to "New-Domain" rebooted and logged on.  Set up new Outlook profiles and imported emails back from the PST files on each C drive root. So far so good.

However, this morning I was told that one of the email accounts "Science" which is accessed by everyone has a lot of data missing.  The mailbox had a number of subdirectories containing archived emails, however it seems that the only subdirectory to have a series of further sub directories is empty. (all first lever sub directories still had their emails in) The sub-subdirectory titles are there but when you click in each one they are empty.  We did tick the "include subdirectories" box when exportting the emails by the way.

So, I've logged onto the old domain on one of the PC's and tried to get into Outlook and keep getting the error "Microsoft Office Outlook Cannot open your default e-mail folders. You must connect to Microsoft Exchange with the current profile before you can syncronize your folders with your offline folder file" and I can't get to the old Science messages to try and export them again.

Further information - We are using Outlook 2007 and Windows XP Pro on the PC's.  Also, the old domain is not appearing in the domain pull down list when you log on, only the local machine and "New-Domain" appears so I am logging on as old-domain\user as the username.

Guys I'm really stuck here and I'm sat here on site waiting for one of you to smack me round the head, call me stupid and guide me as to how I can get round this, so would really appreciate a quick response.  Many thanks in advance! Adam

Hi,

A quick thought. I'd be checking your DNS setup. Can you ping the old domain? If DNS can't resolve the old domain then I don't think you will see the domain in the logon screen domain drop down list.

If you can't ping the exchangeserver.old-domain.com then you won't be able to open the old mailbox.

Hi, I've joined the PC back to the old domain, restarted, logged on as the user in question, when I launch Outlook it asks me to create a profile, I enter the old servers name and the username, hit check name and that resolves fine, after that however I get the cannot open default folders error again. I've pinged the exchange server from the command prompt by name and that got a response.  Does this help at all? Thanks Adam

given what you have told me, you have not set up a trust between the 2 domains and that is why you cannot see them in the drop down list
DNS may be an issue too for communications between the 2 domains so i would add a forwarder on each of the domains to point to the other domain controller respectively so if it cannot resolve the name in th dns on that server it will look at the old server.
when setting up the outlook profile disable the cache option that is why you are getting the message.

aneasier way to do the mailbox and user account migration would have been to use AD migration tool it is designed for this purpose.

Active Directory Migration Tool???? DOH!!!

Would this tool be useful retrospectively or have we missed the boat?

Thanks

Both servers are still online, what do I do delete all users from new server and start again? Will it take the newserver out of the new domain we put it in and into the old one.? Cheers

no you should be able to keep everything you have done so far just migrate the mailboxes to the new exchange server,
it will stay on the domain it is on.
it ijust moves all the mailboxes accross domains and organisations if you move just the mailboxes and not the user accounts it may just orphan the mailboxes in which case just associate them with the appropriate user account
install it and have a look it i quite easy to use.
Accepted Solution

Was there a reason for creating the new domain? Why not just the new SBS server to the old domain and then you would not need to create new users account or move the computers to the new domain.
