The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

"Requesting data from Microsoft Exchange Server" Notification
Tags: Microsoft, Exchange Server, 2003 Standard
Requesting data from Microsoft Exchange Server.  There is no server name listed in the notification.
I have a few users that are reporting they are getting this notification periodically through out the course of their day.  The users that claim this are using both Outlook 2003, and 2000.  Although we also have 2 Outlook 2007 users that aren't experiencing the notification.  The machines they are using are rather old, my guess is at least 5 years old, Pentium 4's with 1GB or less of ram.  The machines are connecting to the Exchange server via our LAN, and they pass through at least 3 switches before reaching the server (6 switches total here).  The last two switches are a logical link dual Cat6 300 foot run. (it's like a long bridge between 5 of the switches and the 6th switch, all the servers are connected to this 6th switch) I"ve been using Cisco Network Analyzer to monitor the bandwidth usage for all the switches and connections and do not see any utilization above even 2% of the 100 mbps or 1000 mbps connections.  I ran a bandwidth monitor on the exchange server and did not log anything in excess of 50 mbps, the NIC in the server is 10/100/1000.  There was some high latency times on the hard disks in the server, but that's the only thing I've come up with as the potential cause.

Could there be any other bottlenecks that are causing this?  The server appears okay except for the hard disks, and the network seems to be handling the bandwidth. Could it just be the older systems that are having problems?  Could it be the length of the cable run?  Some users have a very large in box reaching 2GB and containing 10,000 items and they don't complain, yet others that only have 1GB and 4,000 or less items complain.

I found the article on how to disable or delay the notification for Outlook 2002, does that apply to 2003 and 2000 as well?  I plan on upgrading all the 2000 users to at least 2003.

Other info: about 24 Exchange users total, MS Windows XP Pro SP2 for all users, Office 2000, 2003 and 2007 in environment.  Mailboxes for 'power' users range from 1GB to 2GB, 4,000 to 15,000 items.  Exchange server has 32GB of total storage space available for storage and is at 17.4 GB full. We also tend to have large data files sent to our FTP server, and most users also access network servers, print servers, and 2 other database servers via this same cat6 logical link)

Thanks.

Have you run the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer and the Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant yet?
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/bb288481.aspx
They should get you some more info on what is causing the problem.

I've ran the Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant.  I ran it twice, back to back about 10 minutes apart.  The first run through it listed the following Items of serverity Erros: Disk bottleneck, High RPC latencies or High RPC rates, and Long wait time in calls to content conversion.  Items of severity Warning: Moderate user RPC activity.  The second run through came out all clear.  So I think that points to the hard disks coming under load and they can't keep up.  So I should probably replace the array with larger drives, my boss however has instructed me to 'dig deeper' since he isn't experiencing any difficulties.

I will download and run the Best Practices Analyzer and post back what I find.

How much memory does the server have? Also, any errors in the application log?

03.21.2008 at 03:29PM PDT, ID: 21183721
Server has 2GB of RAM, was considering installing another 2GB anyways though.

As I suspected and was able to confirm in the System log one of the 4 hard drives in the data storage array has failed.

The Application log revealed these two errors:
LDAP Returned The Error [35] unwilling to perform when importing the transaction.
and
LDAP Bind was unseccessful on directory Server.Domain.Net for distinguished name.

I withheld the Server name above, but note that the serer it mentions was intentionally taken offline.  It was a temporary domain server, and the actual domain server is up and running.

I'm still runing the Best Practices Analyzer

Got the following critical issues doing the Health check in the Best Practicies Analyzer:
3GB is not set
and
HeapDecommitFreeBlockThreshold is not set

Set the /3GB switch, and also set the HeapDecommitFreeBlockThreshold to 262144 (0x00040000)

Requested the MS hotfix for the LDAP Returned The Error [35], and working on the LDAP Bind Error, haev put in a support ticket to my corporate IT to have the domain admin update the Windows domain controller listed int he Exchange manager, since they have denied me access to do it myself.

Going to reboot and see what we get.
