The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Exchange 2003 not Receiving Outside Email
Tags: Microsoft, Exchange Server, 2003
About 48 hours ago our Exchange 2003 server on a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition stopped receiving emails from outside domains. Internal email are sent and received just fine and we can send emails out to different domains. Our email comes in through a SonicWall A200 Email Security Appliance which has been installed for 6 months.

Nine days ago I changed the DNS and IP address of our email server because of an issue of emails being marked as spam by a local provider. That didn't solve the problem so two days later I changed it back to the original settings both DNS and on the SonicWall 2040 Internet Security Appliance. Everything continued to work fine until five days later when we stopped receiving outside domain emails.

I've ran TraceRoutes, DNS Lookups and everything looks good from those websites. I've restarted the server several times and restarted the MS Exchange Information Store a few times as well. When I look at the A200's Auditing it shows email messages coming in and being marked properly as spam, phishing, etc. But good emails as soon as they come in are marked as queued and then seconds later marked as bounced. When I look at the message detail in the A200 it has good emails marked as Good. So it appears that Exchange isn't accepting the emails or the A200 isn't actually passing the emails on.

f you can connect to your exchange server on port 25 and manually send an email - exchange is fine - I'd be looking at the queues and event logs on your upstream device

I can telnet from within the network into the server. I haven't tried telnet from outside the network yet. However when I try to send an email, when I enter:

RCPT TO: myemail@domain.com
It responds with an error:
550 5.7.1 192.x.x.x has been blocked by Open Relay Database

On the A200 I can look at the Auditing which shows the messages that have come in and has marked the messages as Bounced that are good email. I don't know of how to find out where or why it bounced.

In the Event Viewer under Application  there are error messages for a mass emailing sent out yesterday that reads:

A non-delivery report with a status code of 4.0.0 (or 5.4.0) was generated for recipient email-address...

But the message doesn't get returned to the sender's email account. I'm not sure of any other logs I should be checking.

I'm thinking this might be a clue

550 5.7.1 192.x.x.x has been blocked by Open Relay Database

are you running Intelligent Message Filtering? what do you have configured as a provider?

also - if you do have ORDBS configured - As of March 25, 2007, ORDB.org started confirming all requests done to the blacklist, which will result in the incorrect blocking of emails.

I think the timing is a bit more than coincidental
