The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Mailbox deleted but not the active directory account - getting Mapi errors when trying to recover mailbox
Tags: Microsoft, Exchange, 2003 SP2, Mailbox recovery
An Exchange 2003 Outlook 2003 user had a mailbox corruption issue caused by Norton 360 on a Vista PC.  He thought he had a current .PST backup.  His mailbox was deleted but not the active directory account.  His .PST was restored AFTER his mailbox was created again but discovered he was missing a years worth of email data.  We use Backup Exec 11d to backup the store.  We created a Recovery Storage Group and sucessfully restored the store to that location using BUE.  When we try to recover his mailbox we get a Mapi login failure.  When we recover another users mailbox the restore works fine.  The difference is the target recovery user mailbox was deleted before the RSG was tried.

What other methods can we use to recover his mailbox contents from the store backup?

you mean marked deleted, but not purged?

and what was the exact mapi error?

Backup Exec 11d and up does not recommend Brick Level backups anymore, instead they recommend using the store level backup.   The backup and restore method works as I proved it on another mailbox.  So this is not the issue.

The mailbox was deleted and purged then recreated then the .pst restored.  Upon discoverd missing data then the RSG and exmerge method were employed.
That is when we got the Mapi login failure.  I don't recall the exact Mapi error message - I will have to review the event logs.

KB824126 was the article I followed;  An excerpt from this article reads
"When you delete a mailbox, mailbox attributes are removed from the user object in Active Directory that previously owned the mailbox. As a result, you cannot use a Recovery Storage Group to recover a deleted mailbox."

This is the problem I am having.  Is there anyway you have experienced around this?  I read somewhere to create another storage group (not a RSG) but extract the RSG mailbox into the other SG for recovery and learn and apply the old msExchMailboxGUID to recover.

I think we are sunk because the msExchMailboxGUID was deleted when the mailbox was deleted.  Unless there is a way to recreate the msExchMailboxGUID
exactly I don't think there is any recovery possible.

try re-mail-enabling the account in question (if it is still around) - or create a new mail-enabled account and use adsiedit to give it the legacyExchangeDn of the account you are trying to get the mailbox back for

the format is

/o=%ORG% /ou=%ADMIN GROUP%/cn=Recipients/cn=%USERNAME%

that should help

You cannot connect user mailboxes in a Recovery Storage Group to user accounts in Active Directory. The only supported method that you can use to access mailboxes in a Recovery Storage Group is by using the Exchange Server 2003 version of the Exmerge.exe tool.
