OWA2003 - Installing a front end server. The first try didn't work so any help would be appreciated. How do you set up backend virtual directories for owa?

I installed a front end ex2003 std ed server for use with OWA2003. Something went wrong and when I connected to it via an internal browser it allows the user to logon with domain credentials but the outlook gui appeared with a loading&. message and the mailbox contents never appeared. If I click on another folder a window appears saying operation failed cannot connect to internet site http://frontend1/exchange.

Anyway I want to start the install process again from scratch on another server as I need to get this up and running as soon as possible. Any links/advice would be much appreciated.

Current setup/situation:

-1 Win 2003 server domain.

-I have 2 backend servers. Backend1 holds all the mailboxes and Backend2 is another backend server with no mailboxes. I did not set these up. Both servers have Win2003svr standard SP2 and Exchange 2003 Standard SP2 installed.

-I can connect via OWA fine using any internal browser to  http://Backend1/exchange.
If I do the same to //backend2/exchange I get the credentials prompt but after entering my domain details I get a forbidden message on a web page.

-The virtual directories in Backend1 and 2 have been tampered with so I am unsure if set correctly.
I guess this mess caused the problem with the frontend server.

I want to install from scratch on a windows 2003 std svr. I have the exchange 2003 std media and the required service packs.

How do I start this install to get it right. I have read bit and pieces about conflicts with sp2, having the front end backend servers to match and hotfixes but am unsure which to use.

So far I have installed winsvr2003std and then SP2 and then joined the domain.

Before I began the exchange install I wanted to make sure my virtual directories on Backend1 and 2 are setup up for owa properly. How is this done?
