I need help bad, and as a so called "IT Professional" this is making me feel like an IT DUMBASS.
My Exchange server store got completely out of hand without me even noticing. That's problem 1. Here are my details then I'll go into what I was trying to do.
Exchange server has a 125GB drive RAID 5 drive. I noticed only 26GB were available and my private store was over 90GB.
I exported a ton of mailboxes to PST's that I didn't need on there any more and deleted them. I also went through user mailboxes and deleted attachments that were over 30MB. Yes, there were some as large as 350MB!! Then I set a limit on attachments at 10MB. However my private store did not change in size. Obviously it must work like PST's do and retain the data. Looked it up and sure enough you can run ESEUTIL and it will fix that right up. OH NO!! Turns out you need 110% the size of your Private Store available to run ESEUTIL. But wait, it also turns out you can go ahead and move the store and run it on another server then move it back. But guess what you can't do! There is apparently no possible way to copy that file from the Exchange server to the Storage Server because there is not enough free space available. Robocopy, copy, Explorer, even an FTP connection left me totally unable to copy or move the file from one server to the other.
Possible solutions:
1. I figured out that I can probably back the store up to my Sony AIT3 tape drive using ARCServe and restore it to the new server. Run ESEUTIL. Back that up. Restore over the original file (remember I still have a backup of that) and see if that does the trick.
2. Digiliant (my server retailer) suggested buying iSCSI addon so that my exchange server can just keep it's store on the Storage Server.
Possible problems with solutions:
1. TIME!!!! I would basically have to be in my office for an entire day if not longer backing up, running utilities and restoring. But without more money spent I think it's my only solution.
2. I don't know if I'll be able to move the store from the original drive to the iSCSI without running into the same problems, thus still requiring me to backup and restore.
Any ideas, thoughts, words of encouragement, words of discouragement are much appreciated.
