Exchange server 2003 not receiving email from GMail accounts

Ever since we have installed our Exchange 2003 server, we do not get MOST emails from GMail accounts (yes, every now and then we get one).
If I send email from my GMail account to my exchange server, I get the "TEMP_FAILURE: Could not initiate SMTP conversation with any hosts:
[mail.xxxdomain.com. (10): Connection timed out] " error (which eventually returns the "we never could deliver your email" message).
GMail says that the problem is not on their end and points to their help. They have even gone as far as saying that it looks like either a problem with our mail server getting more traffic than it can handle (I've watched and that is not the case) or a network problem on our end (I have checked and that is not the case either).
I ran packet captures on the Exchange server while sending email from my GMail account. I watched the Google server appear in the Exchange queue. The packets show a traditional TCP 3 way handshake which goes through just fine. After that, our mail server sends an SMTP 220 "ok send your traffic" response to the GMail server and gets no response. Shortly after, our server sends it again and gets no response. The third time of getting no response, our server gives up.
GMail support has been no help, claiming that there is nothing wrong on their end (funny that I get all of the emails from support@google.com but almost none from @gmail.com accounts).
I have checked to make sure they are not blacklisted (we're also running GFI Mail Essentials).
I have done MXLOOKUPs on our domain(s) (we have three on the same box... all having the same GMail issue) and everything looks fine.

Any suggestions?
