Exchange server possibly violated

Asked by isitcomputers in Exchange Email Server, Email Servers, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)

Hi,
I have a client that just called in a panic and said she believes their servers were hacked.  They are getting 100's of spam mails and I think (I will have to check further) that there exchange server is sending junk as well.
My question is, I am a novice with exchange.  I can look at logs, DNS entries etc., but I am not a problem tracker.  Can somebody or somebodies assist?  I checked the event log and there have been numerous red alerts over the past few months.  I had them reset the servers as several services were not running.  When the servers are up again, I will provide event log info.
Where else should I look?  The mail sever is Windows 2003 with exchange 2007.
Thanks!
