Exchange - Retry State

Hi

Quite often I look at my exchange que in the system manager, and the messages have a retry next to them, when they do retry they go through fine, does anyone know why they might not be sent first time, would it be the reciptents mail servers being too busy to recieve ? I cant get my head round it.
