Question

SSL Cert for Domain Controller Fail with error 8009480f

Asked by: rockadoodoo

I am submitting Cert requests using Domain Controller template and I get error "The DNS name is unavailable and cannot be added to the Subject Alternative name. 0x8009480f (-2146875377) Denied by Policy Module.  Am trying to secure Exchange 2007 for remote access use.  I have used Technet Script ReqDCCert.vbs, which simplifies the manual tasks of creae Certificates, but this error stops the process at the request stage.  THe failure generation command is: "CERTREQ -submit -attrib "CertificateTemplate:DomainController\nSAN:guid=7c0819e6-8959-421f-b23c-94423d9cc625&DNS=BBSrvr0.BBCorp.local" BBSRVR0.req"  An alternate method would be acceptable.

Hi, this PDF will describe steps to create a self signed SAN Cert for Exchange 2007.

by: rockadoodooPosted on 2008-05-13 at 13:40:23ID: 21559073

That's the standard method, and it works for assigning a certificate and all, but the certificate status at the client is: "Windows does not have enough information to verify this certificate"  If you install it at the client, you still get the certificate error when you go to OWA, and the cert won't work for Outlook RPC over HTTP or on mobile devices for Active sync.  I think I need the Domain Controller template to create a verifiable cert, but I get the original error.  I use the SBS 2003 certificates on SBS2003 clients and they work fine.  I wonder how they are created?

Thanks for your help.

the cert would need to be installed in the appropriate cert store on any client for that cert error to go away. you'll be better off in the long run buying a $30 godaddy cert.

We actually have one on order already from Yahoo, but of course there are many parameters that have to be exactly right so it's taking a few days to rename our contacts in DNS, emailing identification paperwork, etc. before we can get the cert.  And it's more than $30 because it's Exchange 2007 on a domain controller.  It's $199 per year and needs to be updated each year.  Meanwhile, our users, can't use therir pocketpcs, etc.  Also, I have a feeling that the problem causing the error will still be there and will end up getting in the way of using the 3rd party cert.  After all, isn't the solution mentioned by johan strange supposed to work?  It doesn't in this case.  Why will the 3rd party solution work?  That's why I paid for Expert-exchange--so I could get to the real problem.  Maybe I'll call MS--they  are only $275 for events on a domain computer.

The cert you create in my steps (the standard method as you say) is not the cert you install on the client. If you do you will get the errors you described. You need to install the CA Cert on the client so it trists the authority that publishes the Exchange SAN Cert.

To do this you go to http(s)://<certservername>/certsrv select retreive the CA Certificate or CRL - Next - Download CA certificate save the file certnew.cer

You could also get a GoDaddy Cert as above which eliminates the need to install teh CA Root Cert, certs can be applied using a Group Policy

In case someone else stumbles across this post because of the error message, you can also get this error when trying to enroll a windows 2003 domain controller to a windows 2003 sp1 CA.  Running the following script from Microsoft (available at: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc775547.aspx) will fix this problem.

Save the script as:

FixDCtemplate.vbs

The fixDCtemplate.vbs script simplifies a change that is required for any certificate template that needs to accept the subject and subject alternative name as part of a certificate request. To change the msPKI-Certificate-Name-Flag in the certificate templates object, Active Directory Service Interface (ADSI) is used.

The msPKI-Certificate-Name-Flag attribute is actually a bit field, where the first bit determines whether the template accepts the subject and subject alternative name. Before changing the bit, the script determines if the bit is already set.

To run the script, at a command prompt:
cscript fixdctemplate.vbs domaincontroller

--JS

Set oArgs = WScript.Arguments
'
' Parse command line
'
if oArgs.Count <> 1 then
    Wscript.Echo "fixdctemplate {templatename}"
    WScript.Quit 1
end if
Set objRoot = GetObject("LDAP://rootDSE")
Set objTemplate = GetObject("LDAP://CN=" & oArgs(0) & _
                               ",CN=Certificate Templates," & _
                               "CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services," & _
                               objRoot.Get("configurationNamingContext"))
iNameFlag = objTemplate.Get("msPKI-Certificate-Name-Flag")
if iNameFlag = 1 then
    Wscript.Echo "Flag is already set"
else
    objTemplate.Put("msPKI-Certificate-Name-Flag"), 1
    objTemplate.SetInfo
    Wscript.Echo "Flag was set"
end if
