Migration of Exchange 2003 from Phyiscal to Virtual Server - advice?

Tags: Microsoft, Exchange 2003, Standard (Service Pack 2)
I am relativley new to Exchange and Server Administration. However, I am looking at migrating my company Exchange 2003 server (SP2) onto a Virtual Server (Windows Virtual Server R2).

The current setup involves 1 Main Server,  call it "A".

We currnetly have 'A' running Server 2003 SP2 with Exchange 2003 (SP2) and all fully up to date patches released. 'A' also acts as the domain controller for the business.

The plan is to move Exchange and all of its components to a Virtual Server, which is currently running Server 2003 (All updates and Service Packs installed). Call this 'E'.

Essentially, E is ready to go, I have followed Exchange 2003 installation instructions precisley (updates, service packs, tools). It is currently connected on our domain "HT.local".

The big question now goes along the lines of:

"At this stage I am kind of stuck. Being new to this I am not sure how to "migrate" the Exchange running on 'A' over to running on 'E' and then decommission the original. The other downside is that 'A' is currently a live environment so I have to be careful in what I'm doing. Is what I'm trying to achieve going to be very risky or even doable? If not and it seems straight forward, are there any guides/articles/advice which may help me in my task?"

Thanks in advance to any experts who take time out to help this struggling noobie!

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.
