OWA only works if users mailbox on one particular server - why?

4 x Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2 servers (1 front-end with IIS for OWA)

Got a problem with users accessing OWA and using ActiveSync depending on where their mailbox is located.  If the mailbox is located in the Mailbox Store of Server A, all is fine.  However if their mailbox resides in the stores on Servers B, C and D, they cannot do either.

Logging in to OWA gives Error 500 internal server error.
Syncing PDAs with ActiveSync 0x80072ee7 - I'm pretty sure the SSL certificate is fine

We did have a situation where no users could access OWA or sync PDAs, even at the site Server A resides.  However deleting manually created AD Sites and Services connection objects resolved this issue.  Letting KCC figure out its own topology did the trick for users with mailboxes on Server A.
