Question

Free/Busy Issue

Asked by: emerson625

I am having an issue with certain users in exchange not showing free and busy data when setting up a meeting . The unusual thing is they way the user appears in the list when it does not show the free/busy data. Do you have any idea on how to get these user to show there info? I have attached a file to show the issue which shows the email address in the area where the others don't. The ones that show it are not showing the free/busy data.

I believe your issue is not free busy information but rather the Check Name resolution feature of your outlook clients.

by: emerson625Posted on 2008-06-19 at 07:38:54ID: 21822560

Sorry but i am not familiar with that. Do you know of a way to check this?

by: eatmeimadanishPosted on 2008-06-19 at 08:03:31ID: 21822841

When you type a name in outlook, Outlook checks the name of the user against the GAL.  Sometimes users place their personal contacts above the GAL and so the check name feature grabs the email addy from their personal contact list instead of the GAL which contains the Free Busy information.  In Outlook go to TOOLS -> Address Book -> Tools -> Options.  The bottom pane shows you the order of contact lists the check name feature will peruse to resolve the name.  If your GAL list is not on the top, and the user has that person in their personal contact list which is above the GAL, then it resolves the name from their which contains no free busy information (it acts like it is an outside email address).

Thank you very much for getting back to me on this issue. First of all I have looked on my computer and the  GAL is listed first. I tried to  setup an appointment using the scheduling assistant and I am having the same issue with some of the users. I will attach a picture of this appointment. The interesting thing about this is that if i go to another user and then schedule an appointment with the same users that i tried in my appointment the free/busy date does show up for them. So i get no free/busy data for Dennis and If i do the same thing on Gregs computer he see's Dennis's free/busy data. I hope that's not too confusing.

I still believe it is in name resolution.  Have you tried removing all contact lists other than the GAL? The names when populated with email address off to the side indicate either a cached entry or resolving from out side the GAL.  Also, try typing in their login name instead of their user name, or selecting their name directly from the GAL, do you still get the issue?

by: emerson625Posted on 2008-06-19 at 10:05:16ID: 21824168

Yes Ok you are correct. When i selected the name Dennis From the GAL it shows the free/busy Data.
I am not getting the same result with the user Greg so I will delete and reinstall the other address lists and make the GAL first. Thank for solving this issue. You have restored my faith in Experts Exhcange.

Experts Exchange is awesome as long as experts answer questions.  I have been away from this site for a while until they implemented an email alert system that helps escalate issues like this, which I have found makes it more convenient for me to stay involved.  There is no other site that compares to Experts Exchange!

I agree with you. Even if it takes a couple of days to get an answer it worth the wait.
Thanks again
