exchange 2007 unable to open default emial folder

I have a user on my ex07 server who can't open his mailbox
error message says 'unable to open default mailbox folder'
I can open user mailbox as a second maibox wihtout any problems.
I can also open it under user login if I configure profile to diliery new email to a personal folder
however it wont let switch it back from personal to mailbox.
removing and reinstating mailbox did not make any difference.
